Associate Research Scientist - The Verhaak lab

The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine

Farmington, CT

Job posting number: #7087575

Posted: October 21, 2021

Job Description

The Verhaak lab has built extensive expertise in tackling questions such as how oncogenic extrachromosomal DNA elements contribute to treatment resistance; how glioma and microenvironment cell state interactions change during glioma evolution, and how perturbation of glioma drivers affects cellular phenotypes. The Verhaak lab is a hybrid dry and wet lab allowing us to generate and analyze data from emerging technologies including single cell genomics/proteomics, live cell tracking of extrachromosomal DNA, and high-throughput 3D content screens to better answer our biologically-driven questions.

Candidates will be encouraged to pursue studies on the behavior of extrachromosomal DNA, glioma and glioma microenvironment evolution, or to shape their own projects with the datasets and tools that are available to the lab. Associate Research Scientists in the Verhaak lab have the opportunity to leverage the largest convergence of glioma datasets in the world with an extremely sophisticated computational and technological infrastructure. The Lab has a broad collaborative network, both institutionally as well as externally, as evident from our publications with other JAX faculty and the Glioma Longitudinal Analysis network. Our institution is exceptionally well equipped with cutting edge technology. Combined, we offer a supportive environment that is highly conducive to effectively working towards a great future.

If you are a PhD-level or MD-level scientist with first author publications and an interest in cancer genomics, we strongly encourage you to apply! We look for candidates with computational expertise and preferable previous work in cancer. Gender parity and diversity in thought, beliefs, and backgrounds in the lab lead to better, more thoughtful science. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We care about talent but put more emphasis on and about your ambition and curiosity to confront some of formidable questions in cancer evolution: the goal of being an Associate Research Scientist is to help you achieve your career goal(s), evidenced by the many alumni who successfully started their own laboratories. Please take look at our lab website: www.verhaaklab.com to learn more about our recent news and get to know our team members.

Qualifications:
• MD; or PhD in genetics, computational biology, molecular/cell biology, or other quantitative science
• Prior research experience in the following areas will be preferred: cancer, quantitative biology
• Track record of productivity supported by first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Outstanding writing and communication skills, with an ability to work both independently and within collaborative teams productively

About JAX:

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,400 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Augusta, Maine, a genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Connecticut, and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, California, and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
