Postdoctoral Appointee - Condensed Matter Theory Group

Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne, IL

Job posting number: #7098405 (Ref:413130)

Posted: April 22, 2022

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral appointee in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics.

The research program will consist of two projects.  The first is a search for superconductors that could host Majorana fermions.  Examples are twisted bilayer graphene, doped bismuth selenide, and doped potassium tantalate.  Associated with this is a prediction of the unique signatures of Majorana modes in a superconductor that could aid in identifying the nature of its pairing state.  The second project is to develop a theory of mesoscopic properties of quantum wires that could contain Majorana modes, including accounting for charge conservation in the wires.  Associated with this is a better understanding of the physics involved for multi-terminal devices, including the nature of electrical transport and current noise characteristics.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • A strong theoretical background in condensed matter physics is necessary, particularly in the areas of many body physics, mesoscopic, superconductors and topological properties of materials.

  • The candidate is expected to think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment, where interaction with experimentalists is also encouraged.
