Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists, engineers, and business professionals work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy, to protecting ourselves and our environment. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our goal has been to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale.

At Argonne, we explore the world together in order to build a better one!

The world’s best and brightest minds come to Argonne—minds that are curious and bursting with new ideas. Minds that have a passion for excellence and innovation. Whether it be for premier research opportunities, a chance to blend work and home life, a diverse community of colleagues or a place where others genuinely care about the planet, Argonne offers something for you.  We offer work-life balance, professional development opportunities, and a culture of innovation that embraces diversity, inclusion, flexibility, collaboration, and career growth. Argonne also offers a comprehensive array of exceptional benefits to meet a variety of needs.  In addition to medical, dental, life and disability coverage, you’ll have access to paid time off, a retirement plan with a generous match and a number of other benefits, such as on-site wellness facilities, an on-site childcare center and auto and homeowners’ insurance.

At Argonne National Laboratory you will have the opportunity to contribute to and support research that addresses our nation’s challenges and advances the frontiers of science and technology. Our science impacts the world, and you can be a part of that!  Whatever your role—scientist, engineer, or support staff--there is a path for you here at Argonne.

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) division of the Physical Science and Engineering (PSE) directorate seeks applications from entry to mid-level electronics engineers to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists and technicians in the Electrochemical Analysis and Diagnostics Laboratory (EADL).  The EADL is a large, computerized, and automated battery test facility; the purpose of which is to provide reliable, independent, and unbiased evaluations of battery performance and life and the identification of physical and chemical changes related to reduced performance in aged batteries. Our work serves as progress measures for Department of Energy and U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium projects. The methods we use accelerate the performance degradation process, enabling the collection of data in a relatively short amount of time. These data are then used for modeling and life estimation.

The Engineering Specialist will help support the Group’s battery technology research and development activities with the design and implementation of specialized equipment and instrumentation; the improvement, as required, of existing equipment; the installation, execution, and monitoring of advanced battery tests; and analyzing, interpreting, and reporting the results.

Position Requirements

  • Assembling, operating, and repairing electrical and electronic equipment.

  • Experience troubleshooting electronic and electrical equipment. Electronic test equipment and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Knowledge and experience with electronics assembly and fabrication techniques.

  • Demonstrable knowledge of electrical/electronic safety standards and codes.

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and the ability to work safely and efficiently in the laboratory environment are required.

  • Communication skills, especially the ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms with outside vendors, scientists, and other technical personnel in a team environment.

  • Ability to effectively present results to sponsors and peers.

  • Fluency in use of computers, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Experience with batteries and battery testing is a plus.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in electrical engineering at the B.S. or Master’s degree level with 0 years of experience.  Two or more years of relevant experience is preferred.
