Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory’s operations team is looking for a multi-talented Applications Developer to join our Building Controls and Analytics group.

This Applications Developer role is a vital team member in supporting our SQL databases of networked meters and equipment, as well as utilizing a range of skills in programming, application development, and computer science. This role requires to be on-site for the first year of hire, with the option to be part-time virtual at the manager’s discretion after 1 year of employment.

The ideal candidate would be self-motivated and take an interest in aiding our team’s efforts with data analytics and potential application of artificial intelligence to aid the Laboratory’s Infrastructure Services directorate with reporting, making informed investment decisions, and advocating for sustainable, energy efficient solutions.

The role requires an intellectually curious, technology savvy person who will be empowered to explore new methods and learn new skills. That candidate is expected to be proficient in the creation, maintenance and troubleshooting of databases, write efficient queries, develop interfaces, perform data set manipulations to gain insights through automated reporting tools, and create engaging visualizations. The candidate must be willing to complete training to become an expert on our department’s commercially available software applications. Our group’s goal is to find a candidate with the preferred skillset is to help automate workflows and develop the tools to enable end users to easily uncover the data at their disposal.

Responsibilities:

  • Create tools for automating data collection of end users.
  • Help process database information in the most efficient way (compile, code, categorize, calculate, audit).
  • Navigate various platforms (applications, databases, 3rd party utility websites) to extract, transform, and load data for analysis from interval meters, utility bills, weather stations, or building automation system.
  • Assist team with interface development of our existing suite of software applications, such as fault detection and diagnostics, metering, building automation systems, and equipment manufacturer IoT specific.
  • Work with Laboratory’s IT group to connect new devices to our network and integrate into our applications.
  • Aide in software application continuity, version upgrades, security, user access, and integration into other business systems.
  • Help the team procure and deploy new software related to facilities operations as the need arises.
  • Work with the team to create engaging visualizations of data sets that track key building and equipment performance metrics using business intelligence visualization software.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year university in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel user with the ability to create macros.
  • Ability to create in-house tools to query and parse data from varying databases.
  • Proficient in one or several programming languages (i.e., SQL, JavaScript, HTML, Visual Basic for Applications, Python).
  • Willingness to be trained within 1-year of hire for development in our commercially available software applications used for building operations, such as Schneider Electric EcoStruxure and Iconics Genesis 64 Fault Detection and Diagnostics.
  • Willingness to learn a business intelligence data visualization and analytics platform, such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
  • Effective in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships; handling conflict resolution, gaining cooperation of others, and negotiating matters of significance in a team environment.
  • Strong organization and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and to achieve desired goals on schedule.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Two years of database management, programming, application development, or related.
  • Configure new, maintain existing databases, as well as create front end graphic user interfaces.
  • Experience deploying and managing “best practices” for network level applications.
  • Working knowledge of cloud computing platforms that can be used for services like analytics, virtual computing, storage, networking, etc.,
  • Understanding of computer network infrastructure, cabling, switching and cybersecurity.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level PT2 or PT3 dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

  • At a PT2 Level: Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years of experience or equivalent.
  • At a PT3 Level: Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years of experience or equivalent.
