Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Engineer to join the Research and Test Reactor Department (www.anl.gov/nse/research-and-test-reactors). The successful applicant will perform thermal hydraulic analyses (design and safety) related to new reactor designs and conversion of existing research reactors to the use of low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel. It is expected that the engineer will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop applicable physical, mathematical models and computational strategies; compare predictions of reactor performance characteristics with experimental results and/or alternative simulations; prepare reports on the results of analytical activities for presentation to sponsors and the technical community; and coordinate related work activities at the Laboratory and elsewhere, as appropriate.

Since thermal-hydraulics is an important topic within many fields of engineering, the specific field of engineering studied by the successful candidate might include nuclear, mechanical, chemical engineering, or a related field. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD3 or RD4) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • RD3 Level: Bachelor’s and 8+ years; Master’s and 5+ years; or Doctorate and 4+ years; or equivalent.
  • RD4 Level: Bachelor’s and 12+ years; Master’s and 7+ years; Doctorate and 6+ years; or equivalent

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Knowledge of computational modeling of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, for analysis of thermal and safety performance of nuclear reactors and facilities.
  • Skills in the following areas: (i) the application of reactor transient and accident analysis methods and experience in using system codes (e.g., RELAP5, TRACE), and (ii) the application of computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., STAR-CCM+, COMSOL) to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Skill in the application of programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Fortran) for workflow automation and data analysis.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
  • Ability to contribute to projects in a team environment, frequent interaction with co-workers and support personnel are required.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position, successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, citizenship of one of the countries listed in Appendix A to 10 CFR Part 810, and/or obtain a specific authorization under 10 CFR Part 810, as required to comply with DOE federal regulations and contracts.  Illegal drug testing as defined in 10 CFR 707.4 and a background investigation will be required prior to employment.
