Job Description

In this role, you will support researchers in the Advanced Energy Technologies (AET) directorate at Argonne National Laboratory as they develop and submit funding proposals. Argonne derives a substantial fraction of its revenue as a result of funding opportunities that are published by government agencies. Responding to a funding opportunity typically requires preparing a proposal that has substantial non-technical components. Researchers benefit from support to determine proposal content requirements and to collect and compile material that meets these requirements. This role, which will report to the AET chief science and technology officer, does not require working on budgets or other financial elements of the proposal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review request for proposal (RFP) and funding opportunity announcement (FOA) documents from funding agencies and, in coordination with Argonne’s Sponsored Research Office, determine if Argonne is eligible to submit a proposal.

  • Prepare list of requirements stated in the RFP or FOA and compile into compliance matrix suitable for use as tool for proposal preparation management.

  • Support Laboratory Relationship Managers in collection of proposals in scenarios where a sponsor limits the number of submissions from Argonne.

  • Work with principal investigator and other proposal authors to collect and compile supporting information for the proposal, including development and maintenance of templates for common elements (such as data management plans and major facility descriptions).

  • Formatting/producing compliant proposal documents, per the requirements specified in the solicitation instructions and evaluation criteria

  • Develop document templates and other documentation associated with the proposal development process

  • Proofread proposals for spelling, usage, typographical, and grammatical errors

  • Work with Argonne finance staff to incorporate budget into proposal.

  • Conduct non-technical compliance reviews on draft proposals.

  • Submit completed proposal as prescribed by the funding agency.

Position Requirements

  • Ability to review lengthy, detailed RFP and FOA documents and extract relevant information.

  • Communication skills with ability to collect, distill, and compile complex information in a succinct manner.

  • Interpersonal skills with ability to work with proposal authors to collect required proposal information in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deliver completed work product in compliance with firm submission deadlines.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy; strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Adaptability and flexibility; ability to work under pressure and beyond standard hours during busy periods to meet submission deadlines.

  • Ability to comfortably and professionally interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PA1 or PA2) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • PA1: Bachelor’s and 0 years of experience or equivalent.

  • PA2: Bachelor’s and 2 years of experience or equivalent, some may require graduate degree.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in scientific or technical field, writing, or proposals or equivalent.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences:

  • Experience in preparation and/or submission of proposals to government agencies.
