Job Description


The Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, is seeking a Licensed Vocational Nurse II to join our team in supporting physicians in the Faculty Group Practice program at BCM Medical Center (McNair) campus for our outpatient clinical practice. This position will assist with the administrative and clinical operations for the team.


The ideal candidate will be successful if they are organized, efficient, and self-motivated. It is very important the candidate works well with a providers, patients, and other team members.

Job Duties

  • Conducts nurse visits, rooming and discharging patients, taking vital signs, administering vaccines and medications, and assisting with in-clinic procedures.
  • Performs procedures as determined by the clinical needs of the department
  • Provides patient education related to topics such as patient self-care, taking medications appropriately, diabetic education, wound care, and self-injections.
  • Performs and overseeing non-face to face activities, including answering patient phone calls, responding to patient messages, triaging patients, scheduling patient visits, contacting insurance companies for prior authorizations and completing documentation for patients durable medical equipment. 
  • Provides on-going assistance to support staff, MA's and supervisors in areas such as proper and thorough message taking and emergency telephone protocols.
  • Maintains awareness of clinic activity, supporting teamwork by offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for assistance. 
  • Collaborates with team members, including staff, providers and administrators of primary and other departments, to foster healthy relationships in the work environment.
  • Provides and modifies care for complex patients using clinical judgement and evidence-based analytical approach.
  • Maintains Nursing License by the State of Texas Board of Nursing guidelines and Basic Life Support BLS certification as per the Baylor College of Medicine policy.
  • Participates in patient follow-up activities, including relaying diagnostic test results, arranging for prescription refills, facilitating referrals, performing prior authorizations, and preparing information for prescription renewals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures. 
  • Baylor College of Medicine reserves the right to revise job duties and responsibilities as the need arises.
  • Participates in meetings and departmental/college-wide quality improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D and graduated from an approved licensed practical nurse/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN).
  • Two years of relevant experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Current license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the State of Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Basic Life Support certification (BLS).
