Job Description

Summary

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine delivers cutting-edge research focused on cancer biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. The J-Van Nostrand lab is a CPRIT funded laboratory studying the role of metabolic check points in hepatocellular and lung carcinoma, using novel genetically-engineered and humanized mouse models. The selected individual will be performing lab maintenance, basic cell culture work including primary cells, animal studies in metabolism and cancer, and maintaining the mouse colony.  The Research Technician will work with postdocs and senior Faculty members to perform all experiments to achieve the goal of this project. Technician will oversee the research project and relay the findings  to Dr. Van Nostrand. The results of  the research  and their findings  will result in additional funding and findings of the needed research in the area of understanding the role of metabolic checkpoints in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, especially in the context of metabolic disease such as obesity and Type II Diabetes. Evening and weekend hours may be required.

Job Duties

  • Prepares and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments that includes cell culture, western blot, PCR applications, mouse handling and colony maintenance, and mouse cancer and metabolomic studies. 
  • Analyzes data that includes compiling data and analyzing results (i.e., identifying genotypes of mice to maintain mouse lines). 
  • Selects and applies research protocols and procedures that includes implementing mouse studies (i.e., humanized liver transplants) and following standard operating procedures for maintaining lab stocks and mouse colony.
  • Summarizes research findings for publication in research journals as directed and reviewed by the hiring manager that includes generating figures and writing method sections for publication.
  • Joins lab group meetings and shares the results of their lab findings that includes compiling study results and presenting them in either small group or formal lab meetings.
  • Works with postdocs and senior Faculty members to perform all experiments to achieve the goal of this project.  Oversees the research project and relays the findings to Dr. Van Nostrand.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or knowledge in research background in the specific area of mouse studies.
