Job Description


The Department of Dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine has an immediate opening for an experienced Surgical Technician.  The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited Surgical Technician Program and is a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) by NBSTSA.  Experience in a dermatology practice with a surgical environment is a plus.   

The Dermatology Clinic is a state-of-the-art facility that treats patients with skin conditions, performs Mohs Surgery on skin cancer patients, and performs cosmetic procedures.

The Surgical Technician assists in the operating room preparing instruments and supplies, passing them to the surgeon, anticipating and meeting physician needs, and ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure.

Job Duties

•    Sterilize, disinfect, and pass surgical instruments during surgeries.
•    Assist in preparing operating rooms for surgery.
•    Understand surgical procedures and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
•    Ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure.
•    Set up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions prior to operation.
•    Assist Surgeons with gowns and gloves.
•    Prep and label specimens for transport to laboratories for analysis
•    After operations, monitor patients until discharge from the facility.
•    Prepare sterile dressings and help drape a sterile field.
•    Vigilantly maintain a sterile field during surgery.
•    Count supplies prior to surgery and after incisions are closed.
•    Assist other team members with terminal cleaning of room.
•    Help prepare surgical room for next patient.
•    Maintain Inventory Control of medical supplies.
•    Have extensive understanding of all surgical equipment and observe manufacturers guidelines for use.
•    Conducts patient outreach phone calls, post visit follow-up.
•    Assists with procedures in clinical and surgical areas as assigned.
•    May provide guidance to Medical Assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
