What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to support energy storage research and development, incorporating materials science with electrochemical analysis. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Effectively contribute towards presentation and publication activities supporting research efforts, and have interpersonal skills that facilitate effective team research efforts with interdisciplinary staff; + Support research activities associated with advancing the understanding around energy storage systems work funded through Laboratory Directed Research and Development, as well as through other research programs; + Apply skills and critical thinking needed to conduct this work such as familiarity with test operations, data acquisition and instrument control, project planning, test management, and familiarity with environmental, health, safety, and security work planning and controls; + Acquire and use expertise in materials characterization and electrochemistry + Plan, conduct and implement science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field conferred within the last five years + Strong academic record and relevant dissertation project with associated publications exhibiting relevant experience and effective teaming skills. Qualifications We Desire: + Familiarity with data acquisition and control of instrumentation; + Familiarity with battery materials and energy storage systems and theoretical and practical understanding of electrochemistry as it relates to batteries; + Experience coordinating the efforts of a group of technicians and/or students; + Background in analytical techniques and materials characterization; + Ability to work in a team environment and support efforts to meet testing schedules; + Excellent communication skills including reporting of technical results in both written and presentation form as proven through an established publication record, presentations, and/or internally produced reports; + Training and dedication to laboratory safety and experience in dealing with electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical hazards; + Outstanding laboratory and/or test facility safety record and a dedication to the alignment of operational safety principles; + Knowledge of lithium-metal, molten salt, and/or flow battery materials and systems. About Our Team: The Power Sources Research and Development Department conducts energy storage research across numerous topical areas including primary and rechargeable lithium batteries, hybrid power sources, and double layer capacitors for our customers in the DOE, the military, industry, and other Sandia organizations. Our department is a recognized leader in research activities pertaining to lithium primary and secondary batteries for energy and defense applications. In collaboration with others, we develop new power source concepts, electrochemically active materials, and material advancements that lead to new or advanced performing power sources. Our battery safety research and abuse testing laboratories are groundbreaking and help us understand battery failures and lead our engineering efforts to produce abuse tolerant systems for nuclear weapons and other defense and consumer applications that include electric and hybrid-electric vehicles and utility grid energy storage. To accomplish these missions, Department personnel perform applied research, engineering design, hardware development, cell prototyping and fabrication, safety evaluation, and testing. Our personnel also partner with industrial battery manufacturers and other government agencies to develop prototype and final battery hardware, conduct advance materials research and analysis, and actively grow our impact across the energy storage industry.
