Position Summary

Functions as laboratory supervisor of select City of Hope Community Practice Laboratories performing moderate complexity laboratory testing. Meets the education and experience qualifications of CLIA technical consultant to supervise and perform waived and moderate complexity clinical laboratory testing as delegated by the CLIA Laboratory Director and Community Practice Medical Directors. Participates as a member of the City of Hope Medical Foundation leadership p team in fulfilling the department’s objectives and oversees the administrative duties of the Community Practice Laboratories. This role requires up to 80% travel to City of Hope Community Practice locations.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Quality Management
    • Write and revise policies and procedures to ensure that they are adequate for the services provided and reflect current practice, in compliance with regulations and standards. Ensure that the CLIA Laboratory Director approves all new procedures and major revisions.
    • Complete a documented weekly QC review for shifts and trends and ensure corrective action was taken by testing personnel.
    • Complete a documented monthly QC review.
    • Ensure enrollment in required proficiency testing, monitor performance, ensure results are submitted before the due date, review results, and ensure corrective actions are taken.
    • Investigate nonconforming event reports.
    • Coordinate with other COH departments/sites as needed to resolve problems.
    • Ensure that the laboratory operates in compliance with regulatory agencies.
    • Perform gap analysis for new regulations, standards, and policies.
    • Ensure all test instruments are properly maintained.
  • Personnel Management
    • Ensure that all testing personnel have a valid laboratory personnel license, qualifications, and training to meet regulatory requirements.
    • Develop training and competency assessment program.
    • Train new testing personnel and train all testing personnel on new methods.
    • Complete competency assessments of testing personnel in compliance with policies.
    • Provide laboratory function performance assessments of indirect reports to practice management.
  • Financial Accountability
    • Provide quotes needed for the annual budget review.
    • Preparation of ROI’s for new testing, instrumentation and technology.
  • Information Systems
    • Work as a liaison with various IT teams to complete necessary tasks, such as establishing instrument interfaces.
    • Request LIS changes, such as changes to laboratory result reports.
    • Ensure validations are complete and approved prior to reporting patient results.
    • Train staff on the use of the LIS for result reporting and other essential functions.
    • Material Management
    • Maintain adequate lab supply and reagent inventory.
    • Maintain active instrument service contracts.
  • Test Development
    • Research and recommend new technologies and instrumentation.
    • Maintain consistency in testing practices across the network of COH sites.
    • Develop cost-effective procedures.
    • Ensure that all test method performance verifications are completed and approved by the CLIA Laboratory Director prior to performing patient testing.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related biological sciences.

  • Completion of 1 year practical training in an accredited institution.

  • Minimum 5 years in a clinical laboratory performing moderate complexity testing with demonstrated leadership skills, competency in organization, human relation, communication, problem-solving, statistical analysis and computer skills, knowledge in lab information

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or California Laboratory personnel specialist license in relevant area
  • California Driver’s License
  • Valid auto insurance

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $53.19 - $88.82 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
