Job Description

The Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time, exempt Senior Web Developer in the Marketing & Public Relations (M&PR) department. As a member of the Digital Communications team, the position works closely with team members and campus partners and leads the development, programming, and engineering of software running websites and other digital platforms.

This position is responsible for ensuring the website adheres to the University's style guide, developing and maintaining themes and plugins for WordPress, and ensuring that all websites meet the university's standards for SEO and accessibility. The works in close partnership with the department’s assistant director and digital marketing specialist.



Responsibilities:

Leads the development, programming, and engineering of software running websites and other digital platforms
Makes key decisions on the engineering approach to the college's primary digital communication platforms
Creates and maintains software running haslam.utk.edu and other websites
Develops quality assurance plans to ensure projects meet standards of excellence and conducts review of coding on digital properties in support of those plans
Creates and maintains consistent development and accessibility standards
Serves as technical liaison between the college and software/hardware vendors
Keeps a working knowledge of several programming languages, including PHP, MySQL, JS/NodeJS, and React
Maintains the ability to learn and implement new technologies as projects require
Maintains technical documentation and records to support developed software
Documents technical implementations of engineering decisions
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Vocational or technical training and at least eight (8) years of professional experience directly related to software or web development
OR
Associate's degree in a related field and at least five (5) years of professional experience directly related to software or web development
OR
Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least five (5) years of professional experience directly related to software or web development
Desired Qualifications and Experience:

Associate's or bachelor's degree
at least five years of professional experience directly related to software or web development
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

Advanced knowledge of HTML5, CSS/SASS, and other web scripting languages, particularly JavaScript, PHP and MySQL
Advanced knowledge of WordPress CMS & it’s overall architecture including template hierarchy, custom post types & taxonomies
Advanced knowledge of NodeJS, ReactJS
Advanced knowledge of web standards, including web accessibility
Experience developing WordPress plugins and themes
Ability to work with third party APIs and Developing REST APIs
Version control systems such as Git
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to meet deadlines
Ability to act professionally and represents the office in interactions with partners, including upper-level administration
Preferred:

Comfortable with Full-stack web development technologies
Experience developing for the WordPress Gutenberg editor
Experience developing WordPress block themes
Web accessibility (W3C) and SEO standards
Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager experience
