Job Summary
The Data Science & Analytics department at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help the college innovate its use of data and build institutional capacity for evidence-based, data-informed planning, and decision-making. This position will directly influence student success by providing actionable datasets to faculty, staff, administrators, and students by overseeing data integration at SLCC. The Senior Data Engineer works with a team of data engineers to design, implement, maintain and support of SLCC data ecosystem. This includes developing data models, maintaining a data warehouse and analytics environment, and writing scripts for data integration and analysis. This role will work closely and collaboratively with members of the Business Analytics and Research teams to define requirements, mine and analyze data, integrate data from various sources, and deploy high-quality data pipelines to support the analytics needs of SLCC. They will also create and oversee an automated reporting system. This position will require a motivated and experienced data engineer who can ask critical questions and develop and optimize processes to handle the increasing demand for data and analysis effectively. The ideal candidate must be able to identify best practices and innovate solutions to data engineering challenges to ensure the Data Science and Analytics team is delivering the most effective data insights possible. This position will collaborate with administrators, staff, faculty, and students to understand the opportunities for data and data-informed insights at the College. The position requires a focus on delivering trusted, validated, and accurate data.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Data Science and Analytics, the incumbent defines and executes an enterprise data strategy and architecture that supports innovative and efficient analytics for the entire college. The position directs future data initiatives to ensure data governance, quality, and accessibility as well as oversee institutional performance and official reporting.

The incumbent will be expected to appropriately ask critical questions and optimize current data reporting, warehousing, and analytics processes. The incumbent must be able to gather requirements to develop, deploy and maintain analytics optimized data warehouse. This position is responsible for maintaining and optimizing data integrations. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for developing processes to monitor data quality and working with business users and subject matter experts to fix data quality issues.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Data Warehousing
Direct the gathering of requirements from subject matter experts and stakeholders to architect, develop, deploy and maintain the enterprise data warehouse.
Monitor, improve, and optimize existing data integration jobs.
Coordinate the integration of internal and external data sources on a regular basis into analytics and reporting optimized data warehouse.
Work with data stewards throughout the college to understand data and processes for capturing data.
Train analysts and users throughout the college on the definitions and use of data.
Mentor and train junior data engineers.
Support data analytics team with ad-hoc and official reporting.
Assist in developing and maintaining the college’s data dictionary.
Work with the business analytics team to optimize analytics, data governance, and ensure data quality.
Document process, integration jobs, and official reporting extracts.
Automate recurring processes.
Project management.
Team Mentoring and Support
Train and mentor junior data engineers and analysts.
Assist data engineering team in gathering project requirements, design, implementation, peer review, and deployment.
Manage projects to ensure accurate data is available in a timely manner.
Official Reporting
Support the submission of accountability reports for state, federal, accreditation, and other external requirements.
Maintain a consistent, repeatable, and trusted process for processing and submitting accountability reports.
Complete and oversee accountability reports for compliance with state, federal, accreditation, and other external requirements.
Team Stewardship
Serve as the office’s representative on various committees and at various meetings.
Support team efforts to improve collegewide data literacy.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree.
Experience in higher education.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Five (5) to seven (7) years of direct, related work experience.
Experience with data integration tools.
Experience with SQL and Relational Databases.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of data warehouse systems, relational databases, and data integration.
Ability to maintain and optimize data engineering processes.
Experience with database design, data extraction, loading, and transformation.
Extensive experience with structured query language (SQL) and some knowledge of Python and Powershell.
Knowledge of data warehouse architecture, design, and optimization.
Knowledge of data integration tools and processes.
Ability to think systematically from both an executive and a front-line perspective.
Ability to mentor and train junior data engineers and analysts.
Ability to learn new software tools and processes quickly and efficiently.
Experience with project management for data engineering and dev-ops.
Experience in quality assurance and validation of data.
Practical communication skills and comfort working with different teams within the organization.
Must be a creative, optimistic, and collaborative team player with the ability to interact with a diverse team and a proven history of accepting and giving constructive feedback.
