Job Description

The scientists in the Center for Genetic Disorders and Aging Research (CGA) at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute are making research breakthroughs in the biology/genetics of development, homeostasis, regeneration, and aging across a range of disciplines from neuroscience, heart/muscle to liver and other research topics. Sanford Burnham Prebys has also established one of the most sophisticated drug discovery centers in the nonprofit world, which enables a unique continuum from basic discovery to early translational research, with the goal to improve patient health.

We are hiring Genetic Disorders and Aging Research Center Faculty Positions at the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor level.

The Center for Genetic Disorders and Aging Research (CGA) at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is currently seeking to recruit the most brilliant research scientists with interests in studying the biology/genetics of development, homeostasis, regeneration, and aging across a range of disciplines from neuroscience, heart/muscle to liver and other research topics. We are looking for highly motivated faculty recruits at all levels with outstanding promise and/or accomplishments in the following areas:

  • Studying fundamental question in organ/organismal development, differentiation, and aging with relevance to congenital and degenerative diseases, including neurological, cardiac, muscle, liver and other diseases.
  • Integrating basic and translational science in rare monogenic and/or complex polygenic diseases to identify disease-relevant molecular pathways and networks.
  • Using human iPSCs (also patient-derived), organoids and/or animal models to study organelle, cell-cell and organ interactions in the above areas. Develop therapeutics with Sanford Burnham Prebys’ Center for Chemical Genomics.
  • Experimental and computational integration of multi-omic, spatial/insitu and single cell/nuclei technologies (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics, epigenetics, etc.) to identify disease-relevant mechanisms.

Successful candidates will hold an appointment in one of Sanford Burnham Prebys’ CGA programs that are centered around (but not limited to) the following research areas:

Development, Aging and Regeneration Program – Investigation of fundamental questions in development, aging and regeneration using a variety of model systems, including mice, zebrafish, flies, worms, human iPSC-derived systems, 3D organoids and bioengineering approaches. Emphasis on muscle/heart, neuroscience and aging.

Human Genetics Program – Studies of rare diseases. Interest in formulating, assessing, and integrating multi-omic technologies (transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, glycomic) in animal models, including 3-D organoids using patient-derived iPSCs. Interest in developing therapeutics involving extracellular matrix molecules.

Degenerative Diseases Program – Interests in genetic, environmental, and aging factors, as well as in cellular and molecular mechanisms of dysfunction in the spectrum of degenerative diseases, including ER and oxidative stress, protein-misfolding, neurodegeneration, diabetes and liver disease.

Our Center for Genetic Disorders and Aging Research provides a dynamic setting that supports and stimulates the very best science. A comprehensive support system is provided by advanced Shared Resources and from collaborative and energetic colleagues at Sanford Burnham Prebys. We are committed to recruiting and supporting a diverse scientific community and seek to create a faculty of individuals from different backgrounds with a wide range of perspectives and experiences.

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – Our accredited Ph.D. program at Sandford Burnham Prebys provides opportunities to teach and mentor talented graduate students.

Genetic Disorders and Aging Research Center faculty are expected to secure support from diverse funding sources to establish rigorous and competitive research programs. Faculty are encouraged to partner with the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, the Institute’s state-of-the-art center for drug discovery and chemical biology, to advance the development of translational projects.

Required Experience

Requires a PhD, MD or MD/PhD with outstanding training and research experience. Candidates are expected to have an impressive publication record and exceptional research accomplishments. Proven ability to secure extramural funding is required at the Associate/Full Professor level. Candidates at all faculty ranks are invited to apply.

TO APPLY:

Interested applicants should send (by email or online) their CV, together with a cover letter, a short summary of past accomplishments, an outline of future research plans and, for candidates at the assistant professor level, the contact information for 3-4 references to:
