Job Description

Summary

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Medical Assistant II. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the both the physician and APP clinical lead, will perform patient care responsibilities and will provide clerical/administrative support in the clinic. 

Job Purpose

Competent level Medical Assistant who is proficient in delivering patient care in the ambulatory care setting. Performs patient care responsibilities and provides clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting. Provides guidance to entry level Medical Assistants.

Job Duties

  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments. 
  • Conduct patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups. 
  • Manages in-basket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals. 
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork. 
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information. 
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs. 
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit, and enters information in the electronic medical record. 
  • Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician and/or Advanced Practice Provider. 
  • Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition 
  • Delivers staff education, clinical in-services, and/or participate in clinical staff meetings based on the needs of the department and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA. 
  • Supports the clinic / departments compliance with regulatory requirements. 
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and clinical champion for areas of expertise within your specialty and as appropriate to scope of practice for an MA.
  • Conducts Performance Improvement activities that support the clinic / departments goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety and/or efficiency. 
  •  Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
