Position Description
This position is for a highly motivated full-time Animal Technician for our brand new innovative Gnotobiotic Core Facility (GCF) at the Harvard Medical School. The Technician will work under the direct supervision of the GCF Manager. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience working with mice. Experience maintaining mice in sterile isolators is a plus.

The Technician will have demonstrated the ability to work well with colleagues and customers, a strong commitment to personal responsibility, and value for safety. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with a small research team to carry out deadline-oriented tasks. The Technician will be responsible for contributing to the daily operations of the GCF; including but not limited to:
  • Mouse husbandry in isolators.
  • Breakdown and setup of flexible film and semi-rigid isolators.
  • Preparation of sterile supplies including food and bedding.
  • Use of facility equipment including autoclaves and cage washers.
  • Use of microbiological techniques.
  • Collection and maintenance of data; record keeping.
  • Ensure facility compliance with all local and federal animal use regulatory entities.
  • Act as backup for other technicians, as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent with at least 6 months experience in animal care required.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and push/pull up to 300lbs routinely.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • ALAT, or LAT certification by the American Association for Lab Animal Science preferred. Experience in gnotobiotic and germ-free mouse husbandry preferred.
  • May require work with infectious agents.
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment.
Additional Information
This position is considered to be essential personnel; it may require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs. Weekends and holiday work will be required.

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 

Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation.

This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
