Job Description
DescriptionThe University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Scientist I who possesses extensive knowledge in genetics, bioinformatics, RNA and DNA sequencing platforms, and high performance computing operation to work in the laboratory of Dr. Jeremy Day.
The position will:
Collect, analyze, and process large datasets related to single cell RNA sequencing, chromatin accessibility profiling, multiomics, and other whole genome sequencing approaches.
Collaborate with other scientists in lab to perform statistical tests, obtain research results, refine bioinformatics practices, and develop future tools.
Manage large datasets on UAB high performance computing cluster.
Assist with preparation of research manuscripts and extramural grants by creation of graphs, datasets, tables, and figures.
Use common public statistical programming tools (e.g., R, Python) to process large datasets using available packages (e.g., Seurat, Signac, BioConductor).
Assume significant responsibility for overall operation lab data analytics and data analysis projects within the laboratory.
Contribute to the design, interpretation, and writing of grant proposals and publications.
Direct and teach others in lab bioinformatics practices both via face-to-face/virtual training and by developing guidelines for lab practices.
Participate in a team environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates and conducts scientific research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard scientific techniques.
Writes grant applications, carries projects to completion and supervises/trains employees and students.
Designs, performs and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control and protocol compliance.
Collects, analyzes and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs.
Supervises and/or performs equipment maintenance, operations and quality control procedures.
Performs and/or oversees new research procedures.
Serves as principal investigator on sub-projects of complexities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $63,125.00 – $103,700.00 annually
Qualifications
Requirements
Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
OR M.D. and Master's degree.
OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience
OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience
Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences
Degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, or related biological science field.
Prior experience in analysis of single cell RNA sequencing, ATAC-seq, or other whole genome analysis approaches are preferred.
Experience writing grant proposals
