Summary

The Office of Budget and Planning is looking for a business intelligence analyst senior to join our Institutional Research team. This position will focus on supporting and expanding the metrics and Tableau dashboards created by the office to support leadership needs on the Ann Arbor campus. Use business intelligence data and tools to transform data into information through visual and contextual reporting of university data in areas such as tuition, student enrollment and admissions, student outcomes, faculty and human resources, budget and finances. Assist in the management and administration of the design and development of data models, and audit techniques in partnership with data stewards. Participate in business process improvement discussions and provide advice on potential resolutions. Responsibilities*

Respond to requests for information and studies from leadership in a timely manner. Be able to determine the appropriate sources of data and then provide recommendations for data management and the design of dashboards and reports. Develop interactive queries and Tableau dashboards for use by leadership.

Deliver graphical presentations (dashboards, reports, portal interfaces) of data from a variety of data sources. Understand the principles behind encoding data and communicating information that is complex so that it is concise and straight forward for decision-makers.

Troubleshoot business intelligence environment problems and opportunities for improvement and coordinate with ITS to resolve bottlenecks and performance issues.

Assist the office and data stewards in improving data quality through a variety of techniques and methods such as audit reports, identification of derived data elements to include in data warehouses to improve the report writer experience, and advocacy for new or improved business practices of data collection.

Assist office to establish standards and business processes for reporting including template design, visualization, data models, query libraries, and data dictionaries appropriate to support Institutional Research and the budget, planning and management functions of the university. Contribute to an information library or similar format which promotes sharing of information with other institutional researchers at the university. Contribute to data dictionaries and other documentation required to understand information used by university leadership, Institutional Research and the budget planning process.

Assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness and usefulness of the existing suite of Tableau dashboards and metrics and whether they are meeting the needs of leadership and campus community.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree with proven experience in data analysis.
Five years of relevant experience in data analysis and data visualization using Tableau.
Extremely detail oriented with the ability to recognize and investigate data anomalies.
Ability to understand complex business processes and the inter-relatedness of data across an organization.
Competence in query language and working with complex data warehouses and data models.
Sound organizational skills and the ability to successfully multi-task in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills; competence in interpreting and representing numeric data; ability to write and speak clearly when communicating complex ideas and conclusions to leadership.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to coordinate and work effectively with numerous units and staff at various levels.
Proficiency and familiarity with modern database and information system technologies; strong knowledge of and experience with reporting packages (Business Objects, etc.), databases (SQL, Microsoft Access, etc.).
