Job Description

Summary

The goal of the project is to model a human disease in fruit flies. The technician will work with two senior postdoctoral fellows and perform sophisticated cloning experiments to insert human cDNAs in vectors, create variants, deletions, and produce the corresponding transgenic flies using genetic crosses. 

Job Duties

  • Determines where genes are expressed by immunostaining.
  • Performs the confocal microscopy to assess where the gene is expressed and where the proteins are localized subcellularly. Uses genetic crosses other mutants will be intercrossed with these transgenic stocks to suppress or enhance the observed phenotypes.  
  • Extrapolates data observed in flies into human cultured cells to assess if the models generated in flies are evolutionarily conserved.
  • Performs molecular biology experiments.
  • Performs transgenesis experiments with flies.
  • Conducts extensive genetic crosses with flies. 
  • Performs immunostaining of fly tissues.
  • Conducts confocal microscopy.
  • Maintains fly stocks.
  • Perform tissue culture experiments with human cells.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master's in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Cell Biology.
  • Be motivated and eager join graduate school after two years.
