Job Description
The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of vacuum systems and related equipment in support of the ATLAS accelerator operations. They will also contribute to the design, fabrication, and installation of beamlines for efficient ion beam transport and maintenance.
Knowledge of vacuum principles and equipment is required, as well as experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication. This position must be able to efficiently manage multiple tasks, communicate effectively, and provide documentation to system non-experts.
The candidate must perform in a team environment with changing priorities, be available for on-call and call-in support when assigned to address vacuum system failures, maintain knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, and comply with these policies on a day-to-day basis.
The work described above may also be performed by other Argonne personnel.
Position Requirements
Understanding of basic ultra-high vacuum principles and best practices
Understanding of the operation of vacuum pumps and gauges
Proficiency with the safe use and best practices of hand-held power tools and hand tools
Proficiency with the fabrication of parts using basic shop tools and drawings
Proficiency in general mechanical assembly
Experience logging and documenting system maintenance, performance, and modifications
Ability to work independently following verbal or written instructions
Available for on-call and call-in support
Preferred Qualifications:
Isolating and troubleshooting problems affecting accelerator vacuum systems
Ability to use multi-meters and other basic measuring tools
Familiarity with relay logic and interlock systems
Experience with PLC controls
Experience servicing and repairing vacuum equipment
Experience leak checking vacuum systems
Familiarity with basic electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
Experience at an accelerator facility
