Argonne National Laboratory is inviting applications for the position of Deputy Division Director of the Strategic Security Sciences (SSS) division.  With an annual budget of $60M+ and over 160 employees, the SSS Division is an applied research organization that enhances global security and stability by delivering scientific and technical solutions to complex national security challenges. The Division’s research focus areas are Nonproliferation Research, Analysis & Engagement; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Detection and Analysis; and National & Cyber Security Information Sciences. Our expertise spans science and technology research and development in the areas such as CBRN nonproliferation analysis and implementation including safeguards and export controls; nuclear and radiological material security; threat prevention, detection, and response and post-event recovery; detector testing and analysis; proactive cyber defense and situational awareness; and simulation, modeling, data analytics, and software development for mission-critical operations.

The Deputy Division Director reports to the Strategic Security Sciences Division Director and provides support in the development and implementation of strategic plans, program development and marketing, and operations. The Deputy Division Director works to develop, build, and manage a diverse and scientifically recognized research portfolio utilizing the multidisciplinary expertise of the Division. This position may be responsible for the direct management of one or more departments/programs within the Division at the discretion of the Division Director. This position will have regular interaction with Laboratory Management, and possibly the Department of Energy and other Federal sponsors. This position requires 50% time in the Deputy Division Director role and 50% programmatic work. This position acts on behalf of the Division Director as needed.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Background in strategic planning, change management, program development, leadership of a technical program, and operations leadership.

  • Comprehensive leadership and management skills necessary to define and implement Division strategy.

  • Skill in building and sustaining consensus and collaboration among key stakeholders, including interacting, and coordinating with sponsoring organizations.

  • Skill in communicating division strategy and needs with senior leadership and management to gain support.

  • Skill in the development of technical programs and in management of technical groups and individual scientists.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in one or more of the research and development activities of the division supporting DOE and other federal sponsors. (e.g., chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) nonproliferation & security, CBRN detection & analysis, cybersecurity, or information systems).

  • Technical expertise in at least one of the following functional areas: CBRN science or engineering; CBRN nonproliferation or security, CBRN detection and analysis, cybersecurity, or software engineering for information system development.

  • Knowledge and understanding of research laboratory operations and activities, and of the regulatory requirements that apply to such operations and activities.

  • Experience in management of multidisciplinary activities, including the ability to develop strategies to attract, develop, and retain a high-performing, diverse staff.

  • Ability to lead Division programs and serve as the point of contact to external and internal customers.

  • Ability to lead Division infrastructure strategy and development efforts.

  • Ability to prioritize, plan and deliver workflow in a time-sensitive environment, while maintaining the ability to remain flexible and adjust to changing situations.

  • Working experience, or equivalent, with emphasis on the development, operation, and maintenance of a technical research program.

  • Experience with the safety policies and requirements of research facilities and experimentation.

  • Skills in the technical and operational management of experimental and testing facilities.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Q and SCI clearances.

  • Passion for the mission of the Laboratory.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Knowledge of Argonne operational and technical resources and a familiarity with the operating practices of the University of Chicago, the Department of Energy, Federal and State regulatory organizations and other national laboratories.

Education Requirements:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemistry, or biology, social science and law, computer science or cyber security, or applied science is required along with no less than 15 years of directly relevant experience with demonstrated accomplishment in large program or project leadership, including both technical and management aspects.
