Job Description

General Surgical Moonlighter

 

Requirements:

1.     Board eligible general surgeon.

2.     Current and continued medical staff privileges for this position.

3.     Adequate and current clinical documentation.

4.   Maintenance of compliance with 80-hour work week requirement.

5.   Availability to cover the necessary work shifts including 1st surgical call.

 

Scope of practice:

 

  • General Surgery Consultation:
  • All new general surgery consultations during the call period will be evaluated by the on-call practitioner with the assistance of the first call general surgery person when available. Consultation include DRC evaluations.
  • Minor procedures performed at bedside will be performed within the approved privileges.
  • Patients that require continued follow up and management by the surgical oncology team will be signed out to the on-call service or the appropriate service in the morning.
  • Will provide attending coverage for the inpatient general surgery service after hours on the weekends and holidays to include rounding on the service.
  • c.     Patients that require emergent surgery will be communicated to the appropriate on call faculty including communication with the on call CGSO trainee when appropriate.

    d.     The practitioner will supervise and staff procedures performed by the first call for general surgery namely APP or surgical trainee including but not limited to central lines, arterial lines, chest tubes. However, lines in the critical care setting will be performed by the Critical Care Moonlighter.

    d.     The practitioner will function as supervisor for junior surgical trainees when requested.

    e.   The practitioner is responsible for prompt and adequate documentation of these interactions by the end of shift of work.
