Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The employee in this position functions as one of a team of microbiologists in the Bacteriology Laboratory, Serology Laboratory, Virology Laboratory or Sequencing Laboratory under close to limited supervision. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, performing manipulation of patient and reference samples, entering specimen data and communications into the CDD Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), generating worksheets, laboratory reports and performing other routine laboratory activities as needed. This position will require experience performing molecular diagnostic testing (PCR) and may require whole genome sequencing of microorganisms. This position participates in ongoing quality improvement/quality assurance activities. This position may also participate in new method development, test costing, method evaluation, test validation, writing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and the occasional instruction of laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures. Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Rotational weekend, holiday and public health emergency response work may also be required.

EDUCATION:
Required
Bachelor's Degree
Degree in Bacteriology, Virology, Microbiology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, or related scientific field of study.

QUALIFICATIONS:
For the Micro I: Medical Technology, Microbiology, Virology, and/or Immunology college-level laboratory course work required. Clinical microbiology laboratory experience preferred. Public health laboratory experience preferred.

For the Micro II: Medical Technology, Microbiology, Virology, and/or Immunology college-level laboratory course work required. Three years clinical microbiology laboratory experience required. Public health laboratory experience preferred. Molecular laboratory testing experience (PCR and nucleic acid sequencing) preferred.

A color vision screening will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.

Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards for high complexity testing, required.

WORK TYPE:
Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

SALARY:
Minimum $47,500 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Minimum salary:
Microbiologist I: $47,500/year
Microbiologist II: $54,000/year
