Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director Nursing and Operations with the support of the Manager Nutrition Services, the Clinical Dietitian plans and directs all activities pertinent to the patient's nutrition care in conjunction with the policies set forth by the hospital.
  • Maintains an effective nutrition care program for all patients.
  • Evaluates patients with special nutritional needs through the admission screening process, communication with other disciplines, and patient visitation. Performs nutritional assessments and develops nutrition care plan.
  • Monitors implementation of the nutritional care plan; delegates care and follow-up to supportive staff; communicates with other disciplines in team activities such as rounds and conferences. Coordinates clinical activities with other members of the department management team.
  • Counsels individuals and families concerning nutrition concepts and modifications: evaluates and documents patients' response to education program.
  • Provides individual and group nutrition counseling. Documents consultation and communicates with referring physicians as needed.
  • Maintains quality assurance program for clinical nutrition and assists in the quality assurance of the department. Monitors patient tray service for conformance to quality standards and diet prescriptions.
  • Assists in conducting ongoing in-service training for other members of the health team as well as for the nutrition staff.
  • Evaluates, revises, and/or develops nutrition programs, policies and procedures in order to maintain conformance with corporate as well as state, federal and JACHO standards.
  • Approves all menus, and, in cooperation with the food service manager, evaluates patient's menus for patient acceptance and appropriateness.
  • Cooperates with other professionals in the development of staff/community preventive/interventive nutrition programs.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Follows hospital/system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition or related area, from an accredited college.


Certifications:

  • Registered dietitian or eligible for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. Currently licensed in the State of Ohio.


Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients, public, medical staff and physicians.


Work Experience:

  • One year experience in the field of nutrition or food service work preferred.
