What You Will Achieve

The Manager/TL , PPT Chemistry/Engineering, will lead and manage the team of operators for the pilot plant API Operations. 

The scope of the position includes a combination of hourly direct reports (typically <10) and on-site contractors with responsibilities for 24x7 operation of the API Pilot Plant, which includes combined fermentation and isolation areas.  Key accountabilities include responsibility for key operations related initiatives including evaluation of piloted processes, equipment issues and upgrades, driving actions as a result of key performance metrics, investigation of safety and process deviations, driving a continuous improvement mindset, driving an incident and injury free culture, and coaching colleagues in their performance and career development.  A successful candidate will have significant prior experience in leading pilot plant facilities and a track-record of collaborating & innovating with cross-functional teams.  They will work extensively with the leaders and staff from the PPT Chemistry/Engineering/ Fermentation and the PPT Chemistry/Engineering/Isolation teams.    

How You Will Achieve It

The PPT Chemistry/Engineering, Pilot Plant Manager/TL is responsible for leadership of a Pilot Plant production area/building/team.  This leader may be assigned to lead and/or provide technical input in the development of ad-hoc projects outside of their day-to-day responsibilities in support of new product development. 

Core responsibilities include the following: 

  • People and technical leadership for PPT Chemistry/Engineering, Fermentation team and is actively involved in daily operations.

  • Significant influence in new product /project development projects to pursue based on a process timelines and project plans

  • Responsible to the shareholders of both PGS and PC1 projects to ensure project timelines and outcomes are met.

  • Manages the budget of the Pilot Plant equipment and staff.

  • Influences directly the outcome of the development of Production Processes which will significantly affect the future budgets of the Kalamazoo site (via waste reduction, green chemistry, working to significantly reduce the sites carbon footprint).

  • Manage the safety performance of staff and the upgrading of equipment to ensure processing can be completed safely in full support of the IIF workplace program (reviewing equipment, processes, and safety procedures Identifies and implements new tools/ technology/ processes that aid in the achievement of performance standards

  • Leads team of colleagues ensure high-level expertise and achievement of performance standards.

  • Applies extensive technical and industry-specific and non-specific expertise and has full knowledge of the requirements of other related disciplines (technical, Regulatory, QO, Project Management, etc…).

  • Able to adapt and respond positively to a variety of situations and people in order to meet changing work unit priorities

  • Acts as an advisor to management, offering recommendations and assessments, and often owning drive for decisions and implementation.

  • Significant intra communication between this leader and  the shareholders (PPT, PGS and BDG teams) is required.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • Applicant must have a High School Diploma (or Equivalent) and 10 years of relevant experience
  • OR an Associates degree with 8 years of experience
  • OR a Bachelors degree with at least 5 years of experience
  • OR Masters Degree with more than 3 years of experience
  • OR a PhD with 0+ years of experience
  • Applicant must have experience leading and scheduling a pilot plant facility
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute and lead project teams with a strong record of integrity.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Candidate must possess flexibility to respond to constantly changing conditions and priorities. 

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with fermentations and isolation processes
  • Working with scientists with varying levels of experience and formal education (BS/MS and/or PhD)
  • Aptitude to utilize data to make decisions
  • A strong personal motivation and aptitude for coaching, leading and managing individuals and teams.
  • An aptitude for understanding process technology and equipment, proven leadership ability, decision making ability, and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • Experience in supporting scale-up and technology transfer to pilot or commercial scale facilities
