What Your Job Will Be Like: Do you want to lead a team of self-starting researchers working at the nexus of machine learning and computational science and engineering? We seek a department manager (Manager, R&D Science and Engineering) for the Computational Data Science Department (8738). You will take on a broad range of responsibilities for technical, programmatic, and personnel management to sustain a robust research program that fuses modeling & simulation with data science to innovate across engineering domains. You will be called on to: + Lead a distributed team of researchers conducting fundamental, open research in new algorithms, e.g., in machine learning, reduced-order modeling, and Bayesian inference, and developing software implementations to prove them out. Anticipate mission challenges in data science and develop team expertise and capabilities to respond. + Partner across the laboratory (especially with computing, engineering, and applied information science centers) and with external partners to conduct research and impact critical national security applications, for example in nuclear deterrence and non-proliferation. Strategically build partnerships to help implement, mature, and deploy our emerging techniques, increasing their TRL and facilitating expedient use across application domains. + Curate the current diverse funding portfolio, proactively set the research and development agenda, and pursue new funding opportunities in machine learning and related emerging areas to secure sustained R&D funding. Specifically, secure new DOE Office of Science funding and build on existing ASC ties to capitalize on new ND machine learning and digital engineering initiatives. Establish a stewardship funding model and growth/impact strategy for department capabilities, including and for example the Pressio reduced-order modeling software. Coordinate research staff to streamline research idea generation and proposal writing processes to increase return on investment. + Grow a diverse team to meet rapidly growing mission application demand for data science R&D. Leverage these challenging applications to cultivate premier open research careers spanning publication, open source software development, external collaboration, and ultimately concrete application impact. Additional/specific responsibilities of the Computational Data Science Manager include: + Assuring program execution (department-level program budgets, staffing, and work) and addressing performance and execution gaps. + Managing the day-to-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department, which includes staff, postdocs, and students. + Providing oversight of security and need-to-know management procedures spanning open through classified work. + Understanding the department's technical work and advocating strongly, both internally and externally.
