Job Description

In this position, you will support national security research through the design, installation operation and engineering of mechanical and electrical equipment. Mechanical design work will be in the field of sensor development, design, and operation. A successful candidate will have the ability to understand and troubleshoot diverse electrical, mechanical and data acquisition systems. You will assist research staff in engineering, quality assurance, testing, and data analysis. You will be responsible for developing test and assembly procedures and review of reports. Candidate will have a proven track record in the development of innovative design concepts and approaches to solve complex engineering problems.  This position works under the supervision of line management and research staff as part of a diverse team including scientists, engineers, and technicians. This position is a mix of design and hands-on assembly, experimentation, and field work. Performs independent assignments with limited direction with ability to determine process based on desired outcome. Manages multiple projects and stakeholders concurrently.  May supervise work of non-exempt technicians.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in experimental equipment design, troubleshooting, repair, setup, and operation.

  • Understanding of data acquisition systems, calibration and proficient record keeping.

  • Understanding of electricity, electronics, and electrical equipment.

  • Interface with customers to determine problems, resolution strategies and how to report results.

  • Analyze data, prepare reports, and present to Principal Investigators.

  • Self-starter who can independently manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Responsible for laboratory upkeep, inventory, ordering, and housekeeping

  • Must maintain knowledge and awareness of Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Maintains awareness of Laboratory ES&H policies and procedures and works in compliance daily.

  • Become a radiological worker (Radiological Worker 2 training will be provided).

  • Ability to become a qualified electrical worker (QEW).

  • Demonstrated oral and written

  • Current or ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

  • Proficient in operation of a personal computer and Microsoft office suite .

  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate periodic experimental needs.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with CAD modeling.

  • Experience with programming and programing languages (preferably Python).

  • Understanding of chemistry and material science.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a bachelor’s degree in engineering, related field, or equivalent experience.

  • PT2: bachelor’s and 2+ years, some occupations may require graduate degree.

  • PT3: bachelor’s and 4+ years, some occupations may require graduate degree and 2+ years.
