Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Network Administrator’s primary function is to support, monitor, and maintain UNCW’s enterprise wireless network infrastructure, which consists of over 3,500 wireless access points. The position maintains configurations, designs solutions for new construction, and provides support for wireless network services to meet the growing needs of the university. This position works within the Networks group and assists in the overall design and maintenance of the campus network.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years experience working with 802.11 wireless technologies, OR a Master’s degree and 2‐4 years experience working with 802.11 wireless technologies, OR an Associate’s and 4-6 years experience working with 802.11 wireless technologies, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining a campus-wide WiFi network solution.
Experience in network management and monitoring software (e.g., Cisco DNA, Cisco Prime).
Experience with a wireless predictive design and survey tool – e.g., Airmagnet, Ekahau, etc.
Solid understanding of Ethernet networking and wireless networks up to 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6).
Understanding of wireless security, including 802.1x, WPA2, and EAP-TLS.
Proficiency in other network standards, including cabling standards, ethernet, TCP/IP, DHCP, routing, and information security practices.
Strong understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for LAN hardware, including routers, controllers, switches, access points, RF design, and protocol analysis.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Experience in Cisco wireless and switching technologies.
Experience in AirOS and IOS wireless controller code.
Experience in higher education networks.
Highly self-motivated and directed.
Keen attention to detail.
Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Team-oriented and skilled in working within a collaborative environment.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Network & Communications is part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) unit of Business Affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The Department of Network & Communications is responsible to ITS and the University for the campus-wide enterprise communications systems, including the wired and wireless networks, communications servers and the voice network, the campus copper and fiber infrastructure, distance education services, and cable television services. Network & Communications also assists in developing, designing, and engineering long-range infrastructure plans for the University and ITS to support the campus community in its goals and objectives.
