Position Summary:

Under leadership supervision, provides massage therapy services to City of Hope patients as appropriate and upon referral by a Physician. This position will focus on providing direct patient care. As a licensed massage therapist, will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team including but not limited to the Integrative Medicine Medical Director, nurse practitioners, social workers, physical therapists, psychiatrists, pain management and palliative care clinics, and clinical researchers. This massage therapist is responsible to ensure medically safe practices and compliance with infection control practices. The massage therapist will maintain massage supplies and necessary equipment. The massage therapist will assist the participant with the completion of release forms, screening tools, program evaluations, and any other patient forms. The selected candidate will maintain complete adherence to all City of Hope policies, procedures, and mission.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provides clinical expertise in implementing the delivery of inpatient and outpatient massage services to COH oncology patient population.
  • Performs massage therapy to control pain, reduce symptoms, and promote relaxation for clients. Properly positions and drapes patients.
  • Evaluate and document patient services rendered, interfacing across multi-modality clinical care and electronic medical record.
  • Demonstrates the ability to discuss the scientific basis and commonly used techniques for massage therapy.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest research or workshops in the use of massage therapy especially in the cancer setting.
  • Will participate in and help conduct massage clinical trials and integrative therapies. Serve on the multi-disciplinary Integrative Medicine clinical care team as well as Supportive Care Medicine.

Basic education, experience, and skills required for consideration:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and be a graduate of a licensed school of massage.
  • 3-5 years of experience working as a massage therapist is required.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of massage techniques, procedures, and basic anatomy.
  • Will have sound knowledge of indications and contraindications to massage.
  • Must possess a basic understanding of health care clinical operations.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Will have strong written and verbal communication with patients and medical providers.
  • Will possess the ability to establish effective working relationships with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to develop, organize, and sustain written procedures and documentation.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • California Massage Therapist licensure required through the Department of Professional Licensure
  • BLS

Preferred education, experience, and skills:

  • Experience with adult cancer patients and/or chronically ill patients preferred.
  • 5 years+ of medical experience with oncology patients preferred.
  • Clinical research experience preferred.
