The Department of Physiology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University invites applications for a non-tenure track research position as an Assistant Research Scientist in the lab of Dr. David Mattson (https://www.augusta.edu/mcg/phy/faculty/phys_faculty_mattson.php). The candidate will perform sophisticated research experiments outlined in the research aims on two National Institutes of Health RO1 grants in a cardiovascular-renal research laboratory, as well as work on their own research projects.

The selected candidate must be able to maintain confidentiality; work independently with only general supervision; complete work and meet deadlines; and be willing and able to work with research animals. The candidate will perform research related to pervasive hypertension, the role of the kidneys in heart disease and stroke, and salt sensitivity. A candidate who possesses knowledge in these areas is desirable. Additionally, the selected candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; good organizational skills; and be detail-oriented and able to prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Help in the planning of scientific research activity, objectives, budget, and other requirements and specifications related to the research, and perform complex data analysis related to producing research results and preparing findings for future development. This individual will also measure the outcome of research processes, prepare reports, develop presentations and graphs for further analysis, and discuss findings and analysis with scholars and professors in the university, as well as with researchers at other universities. Finally, the incumbent will work toward the submission and attainment of extramural grants on independent research topics at the direction of the PI of the laboratory, as well as help the students with research projects and other experiments that they choose to perform for learning purposes.
  • Publish 1-2 papers a year. Present research findings at 1-2 national scientific meetings.
  • Deliver a lecture, seminar or facilitate small group sessions/journal clubs.
  • Provide institutional or national service.


Required Qualifications

A PhD in biomedical sciences, or equivalent doctoral degree, with postdoctoral training is required. Applicants also are expected to have teaching experience and be committed to teaching students in the Medical College and Graduate School.

Basic competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
