Job Description

Chief Objective of Position
The Department of Biology at Radford University invites applications for an adjunct instructor to contribute to the Biology and Biomedical Sciences programs at Radford University Carilion.
Job Summary
Biology adjunct faculty needed to teach Biochemistry lecture and laboratory courses to Biology and Biomedical Sciences majors, and other courses based on departmental needs and areas of expertise. Opportunities may arise to teach majors courses or electives. Course loads most commonly are one or two sections (sections of 10-20 students) of a single course, taught as three hours of lectures combined across all sections, and separate 2- or 3-hour labs for each section.

Adjunct instructors are hired for a three-year term, and teaching assignments are made each semester in consultation with the program director and the department chair. There is no guarantee that an assignment will be available in any given term.

Adjunct faculty hold appointments as defined by their letter of appointment, without eligibility for tenure. Where authorized by the Dean, adjunct appointments may be renewed. Adjunct appointments do not guarantee course assignments.

Required Qualifications
All faculty must have at least a Master’s degree in the field/discipline in which they are teaching with 18 hours of course work related to the course(s) being taught. In some cases, subject to the approval by the Provost, a faculty member could be recommended for appointment based on substitution of significant experience for the degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
Adjunct faculty must hold an advanced degree or equivalent credentials based on experience consistent with accreditation criteria of the discipline and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

All faculty must have at least a Master’s degree in the field in which they are teaching, including 18 graduate hours of coursework related to the specified discipline. In some cases, subject to the approval by the Provost, recommendation for appointment may be based on the substitution of significant experience for the degree. A memo from the Dean placed in the instructor’s personnel file is required to justify an exception to the accreditation standards of SACS and must include certification of the knowledge and skills.
