Position Summary:

This position requires specialized knowledge and skills beyond the Apheresis Nurse II level. This could include serving as a research protocol specialist or therapeutic apheresis training specialist. It requires experience performing patient phlebotomy, therapeutic apheresis and mononuclear cell collection procedures, as well as knowledgeable of regulatory and quality systems requirements of FDA, AABB, and FACT. Participates in department research projects, clinical trials, data gathering and compilation, and trains staff in new or modified procedures. May include responsibility for translating approved research/special protocol requirements and specifications into operational direction and SOPs to be utilized within the Therapeutic Apheresis unit. May also develop validation plans for new processes or equipment. Actively participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure the safety of patients and donors and provide the highest quality care. Demonstrates a caring and professional manner at all times as well as emotional intelligence as a role model for healthy behaviors in alignment with COH code of conduct and relationship-based care. This Apheresis RN actively serves as the primary liaison between the department and protocol teams. Requires thorough knowledge of therapeutic apheresis and mononuclear cell collection procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Has expertise and experience to perform mononuclear cell collections and therapeutic apheresis according to Donor Apheresis Center standard operating procedures on Optia, Amicus and CellEx apheresis instruments
  • May assist Therapeutic Apheresis Manager with translating scientific portions of investigator-initiated clinical research/trial protocol documents into operational procedures to be used by Apheresis RNs within the department. Writes standard operating procedures and validations and recommends changes prior to implementation.
  • Maintains current knowledge of rationale and emerging techniques relating to mononuclear cell collection and apheresis and actively participates in unit project improvement based on evidence-based practice.
  • May serve as primary liaison and coordinator between study/special protocol leaders and the department. Trains employees on new protocol requirements including collection requirements, labeling products, packaging, and shipping final products.
  • Serves as a resource person for the Apheresis Nurse I and II’s within the department.
  • May function as department preceptor and mentor and participate in the design of new procedures, maintain records, including training documentation to meet regulatory requirements. Gathers statistical data, assists in writing SOPs and validation plans.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure safety of the blood supply and provide high quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Reviews all patient/donor information and product data. Identifies abnormal values and initiates follow up.
  • Performs patient procedures; consistently recognizes reactions early and initiates appropriate interventions according to standard operating procedures.
  • Promotes and models teamwork among staff and effectively communicates department issues to the supervisors.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of Donor Center procedures and activities including, but not limited to donor/patient records, equipment maintenance and quality control, error/incident/quality monitoring reports, and customer complaints.
  • Prioritizes workflow, readily adapts to changes in assignment, and completes work in a timely manner.
  • Reviews pertinent departmental standard operating procedures annually and as needed.
  • Utilizes electronic medical record system as necessary to carry out physician orders and document all patient/donor information.
  • Follows all regulatory and quality system requirements in the conduct of the position, including FDA, AABB, FACT, CAP, and State of California Biologics licensure.

Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Three years experience in therapeutic apheresis and/or stem cell collection procedures

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current California Registered Nursing License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred education, experience and skills:

  • HP or QIA
  • In additional to therapeutic apheresis experience, experience with reading research protocols, writing SOPs and training staff.

Additional Information:

Pay Range: $67.13 - $97.33

Shift: 4 (10 hour) shifts

Schedule: Full-time

Sign On Bonus: $20,000.00
