Job Description

At Cleveland Clinic London (CCL), staff nurses are expected to provide effective and efficient care to the highest possible standard and ensure patient safety.

Staff nurses are responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. This role will be required to demonstrate proficient and expert clinical skills and role model Cleveland Clinic values at all times to ensure a high quality patient experience.

Staff nurses will be located on surgical wards, across a range of clinical specialisms. There will be particular emphasis on CCL’s 4 principle clinical specialisms of Neurology, Cardiac, Digestive Diseases and Orthopedics

The role of Staff Nurse is suitable for a qualified nurse who wishes to further their experience and skills within the Nursing profession.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Planning the delivery of patient care and taking responsibility for implementing and evaluating that care, using an appropriate nursing model.
  • Providing advice and education to patients, staff and learners within the directorate as required.
  • Developing communication networks across specialties and throughout the multidisciplinary team.
  • Prioritising tasks effectively, including the workload of others where required, such as learners and Healthcare Assistants.
  • When in charge of the ward, ensuring duties are delegated as appropriate and ensuring the smooth running of the ward.
  • When required, communicating news of a distressing nature to patients and relatives, in a discreet and sensitive manner.
  • Carrying out nursing care to the highest possible standard according to CCL Policy and Clinical Guidelines, in line with NMC requirement. This requires a thorough understanding of policies and guidance related to for example: infection control, hygiene and individualised patient needs.
  • Administering patient medication safely and effectively, in line with CCL Policy, including the administration of intravenous medication.
  • Liaise with the discharge and admissions teams to ensure effective bed management on the ward.
  • Any other duties as required.

Education:

  • RGN level 1 (minimum)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Certificate of Higher Education may be acceptable in the place or Bachelor’s degree

Certifications:

  • Current nursing registration (First Level) through the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) required.
  • No restrictions to practice on NMC record
  • Will have an up to date PIN number with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with no extant restrictions to practice on your record

Languages:

  • Ability to speak and write in English is required.
  • Equivalent to a level of 7 of the International English Language Testing System or the Occupational English Test (OET) at level B is required

Complexity of Work

  • Ability to work autonomously and also within a team environment where appropriate
  • Ability to prioritise workload in a complex environment and work under pressure where required, ensuring high quality, safe and effective patient care
  • Can effectively manage and respond to patients and visitors with challenging behaviour and know when to call for assistance
  • Demonstrates initiative to proactively problem solve with a solution focus, escalating more complex issues as required
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Being reliable and flexible, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment
  • Good oral and written communication skills with clear handwriting and computer literacy

Work Experience/Skills:

  • Appropriate experience working as a Staff Nurse in an acute clinical environment (eg – hospital) is required. Experience of 2 years + in a staff nurse role or similar progression will typically be required
  • Previous experience working within a private hospital setting and/or clinical environment is advantageous but not essential
  • Previous experience working as a surgical nurse in a hospital ward environment is required
  • Knowledge of medical nursing and drugs, including their interactions and side effects
  • The post holder will have a comprehensive knowledge of nursing and will be able to care for a patient from admission to discharge.
  • Will have the ENB 998 or a pass in the Teaching and Mentoring course or be willing to undertake in order to mentor learners and to ensure that they receive the best possible experience from their learning placement.
  • Up to date knowledge of the NMC guidelines and code of conduct

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
