Basic Function:

Participates in supporting the analytics and data visualization efforts of the University, including report writing, dashboard development, data organization, and system administration for cross functional teams. Must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems, and products. Reports to designated administrator.

The Data Management & Analytics team at Kent State University is looking for a Sr Data Analyst to join our team to help us with some exciting data adventures! This position supports the analytics and data visualization efforts of the University, including report writing, dashboard development, data organization, and system administration for cross functional teams. Our team is also working with others in the division of Information Technology to build a data pipeline to enable a consistent, governed way to provide data for application and system integrations.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Develop and update reports and dashboards for University functional areas.

Train and work with functional users to build new skills and knowledge with current analytics systems.

Assemble data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.

Identify, design, and implement internal data process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

Assist users by researching process improvements, data integrations, and new technologies, or by reviewing current functional and system operations to identify new efficiencies.

Manage administration of analytics systems, including monitoring and upgrading.

May provide direct supervision of student employees.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or a related field of study. Four years progressive experience in the following:

Working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
License/Certification:



Knowledge Of:

Various presentation and reporting tools (e.g. Cognos, Power BI, Excel) to generate reports and provide data analysis for supported functions
Common software application packages and tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking
Testing practices, application debugging, and troubleshooting procedures
Software development life cycle, structured programming, object-oriented design and development techniques, and change management
Managing the development and maintenance of system documentation, metadata, data standards, and data quality metrics for the data management system

Skill In:

Time management with the ability to set priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines
Written and verbal communication, with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
Evaluation, optimization, and deployment of data models to achieve greater efficiency and reliability

Ability To:

Manage the development and maintenance of system documentation, metadata, data standards, and data quality metrics for the management system
Develop data strategies and solutions that are incorporated into all aspects of an organization’s data services to achieve data governance and data quality best practices
Utilize data tools, such as Oracle DBMS, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Azure Synapse
Foster and maintain positive and professional working relationships; effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels; and respond appropriately to conflicts and problems
Work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user needs and translate them into technology-based solutions
Apply principles, logical, or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
Keep abreast of the latest industry trends

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Experience building analytics and data visualization solutions to support business functional areas.


Experience building and optimizing data sets and metadata.

Minimum two years of experience utilizing reporting and dashboard technologies such as Microsoft Power BI, IBM Cognos, or Tableau.

Industry experience in Higher Education, including Ellucian Banner ERP.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
