Job Description

The Supervisor of Patient Transport Services will provide guidance and direction to the Patient Transportation Lead(s), Lift Team Lead(s), Lift Technicians and all associated transport staff. Responsibilities may include oversight of day-to-day operations of the department to ensure quality standards are maintained and transportation of patients is performed in a timely, safe and efficient manner.

Primary Functions: 

  • Provides day-to-day department operational oversight
  • Provides direct supervision of Patient Transport and Lift team
  • Provides direct supervision of Patient Transport and Lift team
  • Manages patient transport and lift equipment
  • Serves as Safety Officer for Patient Transport

Job Specific Duties: 

  • Assists transport staff at peak times when workload is high, effectively prioritizes workload, and adjusts staff assignments as needed.
  • Assures adequate staffing on a daily basis for each shift.
  • Provides oversight of staff schedules and is responsible for finding coverage for sick calls when a sick call is received, communicates scheduling problems to manager and helps reduce staff when patient volumes are low.
  • Utilizes time efficiently and delegates other job duties to staff when workload is slow i.e., equipment, cleaning/maintenance, stock, department cleaning.
  • Responds to RRT's and code Blues and/or delegates to staff.
  • Responds to day-to-day challenges and escalates issues to manager. 
  • Provides patient care based on age specific needs according to physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria.
  • Participates in writing new policies & procedures and maintains updates per Joint Commission.
  • Assists Manager with the development of performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assists in determining ways to improve in the quality of transport services.
  • Responsible for data collection gathering and compiling information in an accurate and timely manner for completion of the bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly productivity/statistics reports.
  • Responsible for monthly and quarterly staff productivity.
  • Supervises Patient Transportation staff that include Transportations Assistants, Transportation Assistant Leads, Lift Team and may include volunteers.
  • Conducts interviews with potential candidates, hires, counsels, and terminates staff.
  • Completes all annual staff competencies prior to staff performance evaluations.
  • Completes 90-day staff performance evaluations and provides input for annual performance evaluations.
  • Oversees new hire onboarding and department orientation to all new team members and volunteer staff.
  • Supervises bi-weekly scheduling/Payroll.
  • Creates and posts bi-weekly schedule for transport services. Reduces overtime whenever possible. Completes the weekly payroll in Kronos for all transport staff.
  • Provides Leadership and guidance to staff: Serves as a resource person to staff for technical clinical procedures.
  • Periodically monitor inventory of all equipment. Maintains inventory of iPod and spectra link phones. Makes sure equipment is in good working order. Completes work orders as needed for equipment repair.
  • Orders all office supplies and participates in determining capital equipment needs annually.
  • Serves as Safety Officer for Patient Transport
  • Follows infection control policies related but not limited to standard precautions and isolation precautions. Reports unusual occurrences to manager for follow up. Serves as a member of the Infection Control committee and communicates relevant information to staff.
  • Investigates and completes safety occurrences that are related to Transport services.
  • Facilitates and instructs new hire orientation for Safe Patient Handling.

Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Two years of experience with patient transport or other patient care staff position and at least one year in a leadership capacity.
  • Working knowledge of lifting techniques with the physical ability necessary for frequent lifting and pushing of light to heavy objects, and long periods of standing and walking.
