Job Description

Summary

The lab manager will participate in the purchasing of equipment and train others to use the equipment. She/he will place service calls for equipment. She/he will serve as biosafety officer. She/he will also order laboratory supplies. A second set of duties will relate to animal care. She/he will oversee and monitor the animal husbandry logistics and perform activities related to the research using mice. She/he will update standard operating procedures and manage the mouse colonies. She/he will also provide health checks and husbandry services.

 

The Bellen lab employs more than 30 people and has more than $3.5M in NIH support as well as other funding. Hence, we do have a lot of equipment that needs to be taken care of, and we need to purchase a lot of supplies. 
 

Job Duties

  • Specific duties will include:    
    • Assists with the equipment.
    • Consults with Dr. Bellen about equipment purchase priorities based on budget and condition of existing equipment.
    • Prepares and puts in place equipment scheduled for use.
    • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions and arranges service calls for equipment. 
    • Purchases lab supplies.
    • Handles travel arrangements.
  • Serves as biosafety officer for the laboratory. 
  • Oversees and monitors regular animal husbandry.
  • Writes and updates standard operating procedures for the animal facility.
  • Manages mouse colonies and provides health checks and husbandry services for animals.
  • Oversees the quarantine of mice imported into the facility and performs the re-derivation.
  • Trains new animal care staff. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience, with prior supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mouse husbandry and technology related to mouse experiments.
