Position Description
We are seeking a motivated full-time Animal Technician for the Harvard Medical School Gnotobiotic Core Facility (GCF). The Technician will work under the supervision of the GCF Manager and alongside 3-4 colleagues to operate a facility that houses sterile mice for research on how microbes impact human immunology and disease.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with mice, and experience maintaining mice in sterile isolators is a plus, but neither are mandatory. This position requires good attention to detail, a high level of organization, and the ability to work both independently and closely with a small research team to carry out deadline-oriented tasks. The GCF offers a dynamic and stimulating work environment, with continuous opportunities for growth and learning.

The Technician will have demonstrated the ability to work well with colleagues and customers, a strong commitment to personal responsibility and safety, and the desire to contribute to cutting-edge research at Harvard Medical School and affiliated institutions.

The Technician will be responsible for contributing to the daily operations of the GCF, including those listed below (training provided for each):
  • Mouse husbandry in sterile isolators.
  • Isolator setup and breakdown.
  • Preparation of sterile supplies, food, and bedding.
  • Operation of facility equipment including autoclaves and cage washer.
  • Use of microbiological techniques to document sterility.
  • Collection and maintenance of data; record keeping.
  • Ensuring facility compliance with safety and animal use policies.
  • Acting as backup for other technicians and performing other duties as needed.
Basic Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent.
 
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree encouraged.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • ALAT, or LAT certification by the American Association for Lab Animal Science preferred.
  • Experience working with mice preferred.
  • Gnotobiotic and germ-free mouse husbandry an asset.
  • May require work with infectious agents.
Additional Information
This position is considered to be essential personnel; it may require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation.

This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
