Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity In Medical Device Development

Departments: Biomedical Engineering and Emergency Medicine

Position Description: The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) is pleased to announce a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship position in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Joint Department in Biomedical Engineering. This exciting postdoctoral opportunity is focused on medical device development with an emphasis on academic leadership development and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

In conjunction with the Medical Design Innovations Laboratory at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) within the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design, the Department of Emergency Medicine has established medical device research, development, and commercialization expertise in the areas of critical lifesaving technologies, especially airway management and ventilation. Additional areas of interest include point-of-care ultrasound imaging, hypo- and hyperthermia devices for austere environments, and clinician-innovator education. A significant component of the program involves working directly with clinicians and facilitating innovation. The Department maintains other important collaborations including the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering, US Army Institute of Surgical Research, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Navy and Air Force medical research units.

Research and development will focus on airway and ventilation device development and will include the development of additional life- and limb-saving technologies of interest to the department. The candidate can also anticipate developing novel technology education programs for medical and healthcare professionals. Work may include research with animals, human subjects, or cadavers, and involves laboratory work involving standard and novel engineering. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to further refine and expand these goals and objectives in collaboration with the supervising mentor, as well as assessment for faculty transition based on performance at the end of the fellowship.
Position Requirements: The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Biomedical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, with other engineering fields and related sciences considered. US citizenship is required, but qualified visa-holders will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Salary and benefits are highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Candidates are expected to obtain appropriate credentials for clinical areas at UT Health and University Hospital, to include meeting health and immunization requirements. Candidates are further expected to meet Department of Defense background requirements for authorization to enter Joint Base San Antonio military medical, training and research facilities.

All postdoctoral appointments are designated as security sensitive positions. UT Health San Antonio is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer including protected veterans and persons with disabilities.
