Position Description

The Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) is seeking a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to work with our team to deliver high quality processes and tools to our clinical research partners via our Gateway software platform.

The National Institutes of Health supports the UDN, which consists of a Data Management Coordinating Center at Harvard Medical School, nineteen Clinical Sites (Baylor College of Medicine, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania, Duke Medical Center, Harvard Affiliate Hospitals, Indiana University, Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, the NIH Undiagnosed Disease Program, Sanford Health, Stanford Medical Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of California-Irvine/Children’s Hospital of Orange County, University of California - Los Angeles, University of Miami, University of Utah, University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Washington University in St. Louis), a Sequencing Core (Baylor College of Medicine), and a model organisms screening center (Baylor College of Medicine, University of Oregon, and Washington University in St. Louis).
Together these sites aim to:

  1. Provide answers for patients with undiagnosed diseases from around the world;
  2. Generate new knowledge about disease mechanisms; 
  3. Assess the application of new approaches to phenotyping and the use of genomic technologies; and
  4. Identify potential therapeutic targets, if possible.


Key Responsibilities

  • Own the system level architecture of the UDN Gateway and related systems.
  • Partner with engineering and product management on the design and development of new platform capabilities from early concept through to production delivery.
  • Partner with Harvard Medical School IT to architect highly available, scalable, secure, and FISMA compliant systems in the cloud.
  • Recommend new technologies based upon business value drivers and return on investment and drive adoption of selected technologies.
  • Assist in investigation and resolution of infrastructure-related incidents and problems, driving root cause analysis and implementing preventative measures.
  • Create high quality documentation for all aspects of UDN systems, including system architecture, configuration, and support procedures, ensuring that this documentation remains accurate and up-to-date.
  • Work with the development team to understand the build/deliver process of software releases through CI/CD, and identify opportunities to increase the efficiency of getting high quality code to production environments though tooling and automation.
  • Provide technical guidance to other teams as needed, communicating technical concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Working Conditions
  • Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours, and may be called during off hours
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of configuration and design of IT infrastructure systems within an enterprise environment
  • Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
