Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented researchers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity. The Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) division is supporting the transition to a decarbonized economy by developing sustainable transportation and power solutions through ground-breaking experimental and analytical activities. We demonstrate and deploy creative strategies to decarbonize energy systems with world-class expertise and one-of-a-kind user facilities.

The Advanced Mobility and Grid Integration Technology (AMAGIT) department focuses on overcoming barriers related to emerging vehicle technologies and electric vehicle grid integration. Through collaborative projects with government, industry, and academia a multi-disciplinary team with decades of experience in experimental RD&D develops solutions for connected and automated vehicles, advanced electrified powertrains, and smart vehicle grid integration. The department, comprised of the Advanced Mobility Technology and the Grid Integration Technology groups, develops, and employs novel experimental capabilities including dynamometer and on-road vehicle hardware-in-the-loop capabilities, mobile data acquisition systems, and enabling grid integration technologies.

This new position will be a part of the Grid Integration Technology team that is focused on e-mobility charging system technologies and their integration with variable renewable resources, energy storage, electricity markets, and power systems operation. The new hire will be working at Argonne’s Smart Energy Plaza, home to the laboratory’s EV Smart-Grid Interoperability Center, which is a fully renovated and repurposed ex-gas station designed to conduct research on the integration and management of EV charging, renewables, building systems, and energy storage.

The pre-doctoral researcher position will be responsible for aiding project managers and lead researchers on projects related to analysis of in field electrical systems and components. This position involves investigating and developing solutions to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and operation of distribution systems, and site energy management. The pre-doctoral candidate will be expected to gather and analyze data from prototype BESS systems and EV infrastructure systems while understanding emerging technologies and implications of technologies to the greater power system. The work will include characterization of load and generation systems and extrapolation of performance metrics to simulate grid impacts and mitigation strategies at scale.

Position Requirements

  • Master’s degree and 1+ years in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related fields.

  • Knowledge of real-time control systems, and feedback control loops.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, Python and proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink.

  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), and hardware/software tools commonly used in HIL experimentation, ex. Opal-RT.

  • Understanding of electrical and electronic hardware components, such as ECUs, sensors and communication protocols like LIN and Ethernet.

  • Proficiency in modeling and simulation including developing and validating mathematical models of physical systems.

  • Skilled communication and collaboration skills – ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams including software developers and hardware engineers.

  • Expertise designing test cases, conducting HIL experiments, and analyzing test results to validate hardware and software components.

  • The ability to manage projects, set priorities, and meet project deliverables.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve issues with test setups and results capture.

  • Commitment to ongoing learning and staying updated in the latest technologies related to energy storage and EV charging technologies.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
