About the Job
We have an opening for a research scientist available immediately in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to serve as a Cancer Bioengineering Initiative (CBI) Bioinformatics Researcher Scientist. The primary objective of this position is to serve as a bioinformatics analyst and developer for collaborative CBI research and clinical projects. CBI comprises a multi-disciplinary team spanning engineering, mathematics, and biology that bring a diverse suite of advanced technologies (optical imaging, biophysical modeling, microfabrication, and genome engineering) together to enable high impact projects.

The core faculty supporting this position are Paolo Provenzano, Dave Odde, Branden Moriarity, Dave Wood, and Beau Webber. The successful applicant will report to Paolo Provenzano and will be mentored by a senior Bioinformaticist in the laboratory of Dave Largaespada.

The principal duties and responsibilities for this position are:

Lead bioinformatics analysis projects, including work with experimental design, in-depth data analysis, and preparing results for presentation or publication (85%)
Collaborate with peer CBI researchers from complementary engineering fields (genome engineering, microfabrication, and optical imaging) to develop basic team science project management tools and collaborative culture (5%)
Author, co-author, and otherwise collaborate on reports, conference papers and journal articles. (10%)
The anticipated salary range for this position is $70-75K.


A Ph.D. in a Bioinformatics, Computational or Systems Biology, Engineering or a related field with 1 or more years of research training
Advanced knowledge of next generation sequencing technologies with demonstrated practical experience in developing and carrying out analytical strategies in the context of NGS applications (e.g. RNA-seq, DNA SNP and structural variant detection, de novo sequence assembly, etc.).
A demonstrated track record of productive research (1st author publications in established journals).

Experience with gene screens
Experience with basic project management concepts

Cancer Bioengineering Initiative:
The Cancer Bioengineering Initiative (CBI) is a ten-year initiative, led by an interdisciplinary group of University of Minnesota Faculty, focused on developing an Integrated Engineering Approach to dramatically improve number of cancer drugs successfully moved from the laboratory to patients – potentially saving hundreds of thousands of lives each year. The CBI mission is to transform clinical science by demonstrating that an integrated engineering approach, embodied by a diverse team working in an equitable and inclusive environment, can double cancer clinical trial success rates.

Biomedical Engineering Department:
This position is located in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, which is an undergraduate and graduate degree granting academic and research unit within the College of Science & Engineering. BME has 24 core faculty with additional affiliated faculty from other departments. Department researchers explore the following areas of emphasis: bioinstrumentation and medical devices, biomaterials and micro/nanofabrication, biomechanics, biomedical optics and imaging, biomolecular, cellular and tissue engineering, cancer bioengineering, cardiovascular engineering, neural engineering.
