Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented researchers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity. Argonne’s Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) division within the Advanced Energy Technologies (AET) directorate is supporting the transition to a decarbonized economy by developing sustainable transportation and power solutions through ground-breaking experimental and analytical activities. We demonstrate and deploy creative strategies to decarbonize energy systems with world-class expertise and one-of-a-kind user facilities.
Within TAPS, the Advanced Mobility and Grid Integration Technology (AMAGIT) department focuses on overcoming barriers related to emerging mobility technologies and electric vehicle grid integration. Through collaborative projects with government, industry, and academia, a multi-disciplinary team of experts in experimental RD&D develops solutions for connected and automated vehicles, advanced electrified powertrains and smart vehicle to grid integration. The department, comprised of the Advanced Mobility Technology and the Grid Integration Technology groups, develops, and employs novel experimental capabilities including on-road and chassis dynamometer vehicle hardware-in-the-loop capabilities, mobile data acquisition systems, and enabling grid integration technologies.
As the Director of the AMAGIT department you will play a pivotal role in advancing developments in emerging mobility and grid integration technologies. As a member of the TAPS leadership team, you will be responsible for developing the strategic direction and pursuing implementation opportunities for the AMAGIT department in close collaboration with your peers in the Advanced Propulsion and Power, Vehicle and Mobility Systems and Sustainable Transportation Education and Partnership departments.

Position Responsibilities
Develop and implement the strategic direction for the AMAGIT department maximizing impact towards achieving a decarbonized economy.
Coordinate conception, development, and execution of R&D activities in close collaboration with peers across the division, directorate, and laboratory.
Develop and maintain cutting-edge experimental facilities and ensure safe, efficient operations.
Spearhead the development of innovative technologies and concepts and guide their development into impactful research initiatives and deployments.
Lead a multidisciplinary R&D department providing scientific and technical leadership to group managers and principal investigators.
Support group managers and principal investigators with scope, budget, and schedule for new projects based on matching expertise and capabilities to research needs and project opportunities.
Engage with federal sponsors, peers at other national laboratories a well as domestic and international industrial collaborators through meetings, conferences, and interactions to cultivate robust project networks, fostering collaboration and identifying potential project opportunities.
Position Requirements
Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in applied R&D.
Track record of strategic technology road-mapping and implementation.
Knowledge of advanced and emerging vehicle technologies for light, medium, and heavy-duty applications including connected/automated vehicle systems, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Automated Driving Systems (ADS), and C-V2X vehicle communication.
Knowledge of power systems operations, electricity markets, and issues surrounding the integration of variable renewables, energy storage, and EV infrastructure.
Experience with hardware-based experimental R&D and analytical processes for collection, digestion, and distribution of research data and insights
Proven project management experience.
Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for innovative solutions.
Demonstrated experience leading technical reports, journal articles and performing technical and non-technical presentations.
Adept at working in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Minimum qualifications include the following education and professional experience combinations with degree(s) in Electrical Engineering or related field(s): PhD and 6+ years of experience; Master of Science and 7+ years of experience; Bachelor of Science and 12+ years of experience.
