Job DescriptionPosition Summary:
The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeking an innovative director to provide leadership and guidance of research groups within IAB, advocacy and program development for the institute, and administrative management and oversight of IAB budget and personnel. Whether you already live in this great State or are looking to upgrade, please consider joining our team. If the latter is you, get your parka out of the hall closet and your winter boots dusted off! We offer a generous relocation allowance for the successful candidate.
IAB is a global leader in high-latitude research, with the location of the institute providing a strategic advantage for cutting-edge research. In addition, IAB is home to the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research program, the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, the Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism, the Toolik Field Station, and the USGS Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, as well as an array of individual investigator-driven research. External funding to the Institute exceeds $20M annually and is supported by both federal and state agencies such as NSF, NIH, USGS, NASA, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
To thrive in this role we are seeking a director with significant knowledge, experience, and understanding of business operations and management as well as a strong science background. You will need to be an effective advocate for IAB and the university and be able to attract funding from external sources. We are seeking a director who can recruit and retain quality faculty and staff, particularly members of underrepresented groups. In this role, you would supervise approximately 50 faculty, many of whom hold joint appointments with colleges within UAF. IAB has approximately 70 graduate students working on dynamic research projects for our faculty and we are looking to grow.
If you are interested in joining our cutting-edge research university nestled in Fairbanks, a river city with a thriving arts community, rich culture, and endless opportunities for exploration, apply today!
Ph.D in a science-related field or relevant disciplines represented at IAB with a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible management experience required including at least 5 years of experience in supervising and managing both individuals and teams.
