What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee interested in high temperature ceramics processing and characterization. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform ceramic processing including synthesis of novel metal oxide formulations via solid state and/or solution-based routes + Perform thermal, mechanical, electrical, and structural characterization and analysis of non-stoichiometric oxides (e.g., ferroelectric properties analysis, dilatometry, heat capacity determination, and X-ray diffraction) + Evaluate material properties in extreme environments of mechanical shock and high voltage and current by working with subject matter experts + Attend and present at technical conferences on the national level and to publish in leading journals + Interact with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds + Work with Sandia’s technology transfer and licensing professionals to move successful R&D from the Labs to industry + Assist or lead in the development of proposals to seek funding from sponsors and customers for new or ongoing R&D projects Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + You possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Materials Science, Ceramic Science, Glass Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field (The PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment) + Experience with structure-processing-property relationships in crystalline oxide materials + A proven record of research success, demonstrated by journal publications and conference presentations + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Technical experience with a proven publication record in the area of materials fabrication and processing, particularly related to advanced ceramics and glasses + Experience with ferroelectric materials + Ability to conceive, develop, build, and qualify novel material evaluation tools + Ability to engage and to contribute to multiple programs + Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds + Ability to carry out independent research under the umbrella of related programs with varying needs + Outstanding interpersonal skills About Our Team: The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective-molecular-binding applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nano- to the micro-scale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance. Our efforts support DOE Defense Programs, DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Electricity Distribution and Energy Reliability offices, other federal agencies and industry. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to leverage our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. Research thrusts include nanoparticle, nanofiber, and atomic layer deposited materials, thin films, passive and active materials for electronic, magnetic, photonic, electromechanical, and fluidic microsystems, self-assembly, and colloid chemistry. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
