Summary
The Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified candidate for an Advanced Practice Provider in an acute care clinical setting to provide medical care to patients under the direction of a physician. Candidate will be required to provide clinical excellence, scholarly enthusiasm, and a track record of excellent clinical performance. The provider will have direct patient care responsibilities.
Job Purpose
Provides advanced patient care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.
Job Duties
- Obtains detailed history and perform physical examinations.
- Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
- Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
- Provides follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
- Communicates with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
- Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
- Promotes a positive work environment with a team-based approach through supportive and respectful interactions with peers, staff, and faculty.
- Directs patient care responsibilities including daily rounds, detailed history and physical examinations, patient and family discussions, documentation, assist with working-up, diagnosing and treating emergent surgical conditions with care plan development and implementation.
- Coordinates the transition from inpatient to outpatient care for patients with emergent surgical conditions.
- Manages patients in the outpatient setting including telemedicine and in person clinic visits.
- Orders and interpret appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordination with faculty Supervising Physician.
- Orders X-rays, CT, MRI, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures
- Administers such therapeutic procedures as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care.
- Delegates scheduling and clinical tasks to a medical assistant.
Minimum Qualifications
Physician Assistant:
- Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
- Experience Required: None required, one to two years in a hospital/clinical setting preferred.
- Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Nurse Practitioner:
- Education Required: Master’s degree in Nursing.
- Experience Required: None required, one to two years in a hospital/clinical setting preferred.
- Certification/Licenses/Registration: Texas APRN license. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
