Postdoctoral Appointee – Mechanical Engineering

Argonne National Laboratory

Lemont, USA

Job posting number: #7199756 (Ref:416927)

Job Description

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee. The candidate will review and develop design methods and models for high temperature structural materials, including metals and ceramics, with applications in nuclear reactors, concentrating solar power, thermal energy storage, and other energy systems.

This researcher will work with ANL staff to review, validate, and extend methods for predicting the reliability of high temperature structural components. Relevant methods include deterministic and statistic continuum damage mechanics models, statistical reliability models based on fracture mechanics (e.g., Weibull failure models), and simpler engineering approaches. Specific work might include surveying the literature to identify potential approaches, developing computer codes to implement these approaches, evaluating their accuracy and ease of use, and proposing extension to improve the techniques. Relevant materials include high temperature metallic alloys, including stainless steels and nickel-based superalloys, monolithic ceramics like silicon carbide and MAX phase materials, and ceramic matrix composites, including SiC-SiC and C-C materials. The end goal of this work is to improve the methods used by practicing engineers to design components, to improve their safety, reliability, and performance.

Position Requirements

  • The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Background in fracture mechanics.

  • Experience with finite element simulations.

  • Knowledge with engineering design codes such as the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, API standards, R5, RCC-MRx, or similar documents.

  • Skilled in oral and written communications and presentations at all levels of the organization.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the basic structure-property relations for more than one of the material categories mentioned in the job description.

  • Knowledge specifically of high temperature creep crack growth.

  • Knowledge specifically in high temperature subcritical crack growth in ceramic or composite materials.

  • Detailed knowledge of engineering design codes and standards.

  • Past experience in engineering design, particularly for high temperature components.

  • Experience with the MOOSE finite element simulation framework.

  • Coding experience in C++ and python.
