Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual to join our research group at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center as a Research Associate. Our work focuses on the basic mechanisms of how the brain mediates obesity and metabolic disorders. Using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches, we identify key neural pathways involved in obesity and type 2 diabetes. By manipulating these pathways, we aim to identify novel approaches to ameliorate and potentially reverse obesity and type 2 diabetes. This position offers exciting opportunities to develop skills at the intersection of neuroscience and metabolism - an exciting new frontier in brain research.

Job Duties

  • Plans, directs, and conducts research experiments, including mouse metabolic studies, mouse brain surgery, tissue culture, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, biochemical analysis (Western blot and qPCR), and mouse husbandry.
  • Collects, evaluates, and analyzes data and prepares manuscripts for publication.
  • Develops research techniques and performs applications as needed for specific research projects.
  • Trains new and junior lab members and students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related field
  • Experience and proficiency in animal handling techniques (intraperitoneal injections, intravenous injections, subcutaneous injections, oral gavage, etc) and performing animal survival surgeries
  • Experience in Neuroscience or Metabolism
