Job Description

Position Available: The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at The University of Oklahoma (OU) invites applications for a faculty position in medical imaging at either the tenure-track Assistant Professor or the tenured Associate Professor rank. All areas of medical imaging will be considered, although particular emphasis will be placed on translational cancer research that synergistically engages engineers at OU and clinicians/researchers in the Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC) at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). Research topics of interest include but are not limited to: development of novel investigative medical imaging modalities such as optical, X-ray, ultrasound, and radionuclide imaging technologies to enable more sensitive cancer detection and monitoring of tumor response to treatment; identification and/or development of new quantitative imaging biomarkers using advanced image processing and artificial intelligence (AI) based technologies; assessment of the efficacy of investigative cancer therapy drugs or procedures using medical imaging methods; development of new AI-based prediction models that fuse both imaging and omics biomarkers. The position is expected to start in 2024.

School of Electrical and Computer Engineering: The Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE) has strong graduate programs built on decades of biomedical engineering research through the interdisciplinary center-based research programs funded by prominent agencies and foundations. The Medical Imaging Program in ECE has achieved national prominence, with continual funding by NIH since 2000, including the recently awarded NIH-P20 Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant to stablish the Oklahoma Center of Medical Imaging for Translational Cancer Research. ECE has a strong and growing collaboration with the research and clinical OUHSC community in nearby Oklahoma City, including the SCC.

Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center: SCC is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center with Lead Academic Site status in the National Clinical Trials Network. Since 2014, SCC has been ranked number one in the nation annually for the number of patients recruited to participate in NCI-sponsored clinical trials. The new faculty in medical imaging will be encouraged to apply for SCC membership upon hiring. SCC provides several shared resources and other core services to support the research activities of SCC members. A complete list of these resources and services available to SCC members can be found here: https://www.ouhealth.com/stephenson-cancer-center/cancer-research/cancer-shared-resources-services

COBRE Oklahoma Center of Medical Imaging for Translational Cancer Research: This COBRE, established in 2022 with an NIH P20 grant, aims to enhance the capability of conducting multidisciplinary medical imaging technology and informatics-related translational cancer research on both the OU and OUHSC campuses. The new faculty in medical imaging will have access to the many resources available through the COBRE Research Resource Cores. New faculty holding an NIH ‘New Investigator’ status (https://grants.nih.gov/policy/early-stage/index.htm) can also compete for COBRE Research Project Leader (RPL) grants (typically of ~$250K/year for 3 years). More information about the COBRE Oklahoma Center of Medical Imaging for Translational Cancer Research can be found here: https://www.ou.edu/coe/cobre

The University of Oklahoma:  The University of Oklahoma is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, serving the educational, cultural, economic, and healthcare needs of the state, region, and nation from three campuses: the main campus in Norman, the Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, and the Schusterman Center in Tulsa. OU enrolls over 30,000 students and has more than 2,700 full-time faculty members. Norman is a culturally rich and vibrant town located in the Oklahoma City metro area. With outstanding schools, amenities, and a low cost of living, Norman is a perennial contender on the “Best Places to Live” rankings. Visit soonerway.ou.edu for more information.

Candidate Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Medical Physics, or other related fields is required. Successful candidates must have the interest and ability to contribute significantly to the advancement of medical imaging science and engineering and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research. To be considered at the tenured Associate Professor rank, successful candidates should have an established vibrant research program with a track record of external funding, preferably from NIH. Successful candidates will be also expected to have a commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.

Application Process: Confidential review of nominations, indications of interest, and applications will begin on February 19, 2024. Candidates are invited to submit a cover letter, detailed curriculum vita, and names of at least three references who will be contacted only upon approval from the applicant at interfolio.com. The cover letter may contain vision statements of research and teaching.  Electronic submission in PDF format is preferred, and all application information and inquiries should be directed to the search committee chair: Javier A.
