What Your Job Will Be Like:

Ready to join the Sandia mission and work on real-world projects with national security impact?

MissionTech, Sandia’s Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Mission Technologies student program, is seeking motivated electrical engineering graduate students to join us for a summer internship. With a technical focus in engineering design, component/subsystem development, and product testing, you will partner with ND teams to collaborate on real mission-related deliverables. You will use your foundational engineering skills in electrical design, data analysis, and systems-thinking in an applied contribution to our nation’s security.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work within a research and development, science and engineering environment
  • Collaborate with Sandia staff on projects by using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, collect data through observation and experimentation, and formulate and test hypotheses
  • Support work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles
  • Assist in the creation and application of scientific theories, laws, and engineering methods used within engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact well with diverse teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new knowledge and learn new skills
  • Experience with programming languages and platforms (C, Python, MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW)
  • Experience with electronic hardware, embedded systems, circuit design
  • Ability to obtain a Q-Level security clearance

About Our Team:

MissionTech is an internship program that serves the Nuclear Deterrence (ND) mission at Sandia National Laboratories. MissionTech comprises five mission centers: 1) System Modernization, Advanced Systems and Digital Engineering; 2) Design Engineering and Assurance; 3) Component Science, Engineering, and Production; 4) Stockpile Systems; and 5) Surety, Design Engineering, and Weapons Quality. Our projects span multiple disciplines across mission-critical work and crosscut across all of ND; projects include engineering design, product testing, component research and development, remote sensing, data analytics, and more.

MissionTech interns are onboarded as an integrated part of their project teams and work collaboratively with experienced technical staff who are leaders and experts in their fields. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
