Job Description

The Department of Computer and Computational Sciences at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) seeks to hire a full-time, tenure track professor at the Assistant level. We seek faculty who will inspire and mentor students at all levels while ensuring high academic standards in a nurturing and learner-centered environment in keeping with our HBCU status. The successful applicant will teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in Computer and Computational Sciences. They will also carry out an independent research program with undergraduate participation, advise and mentor undergraduates, and participate in University service as well as in outreach activities geared towards increasing enrollment, gaining ABET accreditation, and developing new curriculum to address the employment needs of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The successful applicant will work productively with students and colleagues of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The Department of Computer and Computational Sciences is one of four departments in the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) serving majors in as well as other STEM disciplines. The Department has a research program in data science/machine learning, parallel computing, and cybersecurity. CSM recently acquired a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster with 640 compute cores.

CSM fosters, supports and rewards excellence in teaching, research, and service. Our academic programs emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, written, and spoken communication and other skills tailored to help students succeed. CSM is committed to helping students excel academically and achieve productive careers through programs in academics, research, and community service. The College provides degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Process Technology. Opportunities leading to degrees in engineering and medicine at affiliated universities augment our degree offerings. CSM includes the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies with a diversity of marine research, including projects related to our NSF EPSCoR funded work focused on ridge to reef processes and interdependent drivers of Small Island resilience. This work is complemented by research in the Caribbean Green Technology Center focused on sustainability and resilience in social, technological, and ecological systems. Research in these centers as well as in the School of Agriculture offer opportunities for collaborative research.

Required Qualifications
PhD in any area of Computer Science or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to teach computer science courses at a diversity of levels.
A research focus in computer science or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to work productively with students and colleagues of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Commitment to lifelong learning and scientific research, academic and pedagogical advancement, and outreach to the local community through service and enhanced opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications
Post-doctoral work.
Research and teaching interests in Big Data, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Operating Systems.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level.
